Alameda County Dems will formally oppose Sheng Thao, Pamela Price recalls
Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao and Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price caught a break in their respective bids to avoid being recalled in November: The Alameda County Democratic Party Central Committee is opposing both recalls.
The vast majority of the candidates and ballot measures the party supported in the March primary won. In 2022, 85% of its endorsees prevailed.
While the vote wasnt too surprising given that the majority of the central committee members are progressives like Thao and Price, it comes as recall backers tout polling that they say shows public support for the recalls and dissatisfaction with both.
Recall supporters blame Thao for rising crime in Oakland, and calls for her ouster started within a few months of her taking office, after she fired Oakland Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong following an outside investigation that found he mishandled two officer misconduct cases. While violent crime in Oakland is lower this year compared with 2023, businesses and residents have raised concerns about public safety and property crimes. Last year some businesses went on strike to demand more attention to crime. Other major businesses have launched safety measures to protect employees.
