California
Related: About this forumDoes California still mail each voter a ballot booklet?
Used to in the 90s before we could do our own Internet search.
Each candidate was invited to submit a 200 word description, and paid for it.
Mostly of course, were the propositions (around 20 each cycle) with the pro and con comments, and rebuttals, and name of sponsors.
Was quite helpful.
Still exist?
Curious.

(16,214 posts)We only got one, though there are multiple voters here. Each voter gets their own sample ballot from the county ahead of time too.

(48,744 posts)There are several candidates for non partisan offices and I will have to find out about each. A booklet would have helped.

(24,771 posts)But you still need to do some research. Local elections are officially non-partisan, so you don't know the political party of anyone running for city or county elections. A quick visit to the County Democratic Committee website will give you the information you need. Also who is behind ballot initiatives.

(1,154 posts)The booklet arrives some weeks before the mail in ballot get here. It's a great way to vote that should be taken nationwide.

(10,629 posts)I use the candidate statements to filter them out: if you can't be bothered to submit a brief statement, I can't be bothered to vote for you (and there is some comic gold in those statements - like the guy who claimed the country started going to hell after Franklin Pierce (no, didn't make sense to me either)). And if the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association is for a proposition, then I'm against it.
If you're a California voter and you're not getting one, contact either you county registrar or your state assembly person - there's a lot of valuable info in them
