Arkansas Democrats consider party's future in virtual leadership forum

WASHINGTON -- Two Arkansas political figures participated in a virtual forum on Saturday regarding the future of the national Democratic Party as members seek new leadership to guide Democrats during Donald Trump's second presidential term.

Quintessa Hathaway and Chris Jones appeared alongside multiple candidates for Democratic National Committee positions to discuss the future of the national party and offer ideas to improve its outreach.

Hathaway, who ran for Arkansas' 2nd Congressional District in the 2022 midterm elections, joined other candidates looking to succeed Jaime Harrison as Democratic National Committee chair. Jones -- the Democratic candidate in Arkansas' gubernatorial election in 2022 -- and 13 other Democrats are vying for three vice chair positions.

Saturday's forum marked the first event allowing Democrats to hear from candidates for the national committee's leadership team. Members will hold a multi-day summit in National Harbor, Md., starting Jan. 30 to vote on new officers.

Current Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison, who is not seeking another term, called for the winter meeting in November, weeks after Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the general election. Republicans additionally won enough congressional races to flip control of the Senate and keep the majority in the House of Representatives.
