It might be just a video thing, but I'm surprised he can play slide on that Gem. The action on those things is super low
Maybe in the studio he used a guitar set up for slide.
Either way, it's a cool tune.
Also, the opening is what he does as Jack Butler in the guitar duel near the end of Crossroads.

Definitely a melodic riff born there. At 1:20.

Edited to add. I just love Steve Vai's work and artistry. The thing about it is that his technical prowess is used creatively and not just shredding. It makes sense within his songs.
