Medical bills are too unreliable to be on credit reports - Rep. backs push to ban medical debt on credit reports
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Gov. Maura Healey took action to prohibit medical debt from being reported to consumer credit agencies in Massachusetts.
State Rep. Bud Williams of the 11th Hampden District applauded the move, calling it an important step toward protecting residents from long-term financial hardship caused by unexpected medical expenses.
The proposed regulations aim to prevent licensed health care providers and debt collectors from reporting medical debt to credit bureaus, ensuring that an illness or medical emergency does not jeopardize a person’s financial future.
The governor’s action aligns with legislation championed by Rep. Williams, “An Act Relative to Medical Debt Exclusion from Creditor Reports’ (H.476). This bill, filed at the start of the 2025-2026 legislative session, reflects Rep. Williams” commitment to shielding consumers from financial penalties linked to necessary medical care.
