Related: About this forumJust picked up the 1931 version of "The Maltese Falcon".
Bought it on Vudu (it's $5 if you buy two others in their 3 for $15 mix and match. I think it's $7.99 if you buy it separately). Anyway, I was completely unfamiliar with it. It's quite different from the Bogart version. It's very typical pre-code. For one, Sam Spade is quite the womanizer.

Twenty years after the events of the novel "The Maltese Falcon," Sam Spade has retired in the small town of Bozouls in southern France; it's 1963, the war has ended, and in a very short time, so, too, will Spade's tranquility.
