Trivia: Billy Wilder originally thought of the idea for the film after seeing Brief Encounter (1945) and wondering about the plight of a character unseen in that film -- the person who lends his apartment for an extramarital tryst. Shirley MacLaine was only given forty pages of the script because Wilder didn't want her to know how the story would turn out. She thought it was because the script wasn't finished.

Trivia: In the scene where Isabel (Amy Irving) is berating her grandmother about her job, she talks about calling Isaac Bashevis Singer on his private phone number. Singer wrote "Yentl, the Yeshiva Boy," and Irving played Haddass in Barbra Streisand's film version, Yentl (1983).

Trivia: For in-flight viewing, several airlines deleted the sequence in which Raymond Babbitt reels off statistics on airline accidents, except Qantas. They even promoted one of the movie's writers to first class once when he travelled on their airline.
Trivia: During filming, Dustin Hoffman was unsure of the film's potential and his own performance. Three weeks into the project, Hoffman wanted out, telling Barry Levinson, "Get Richard Dreyfuss, get somebody, Barry, because this is the worst work of my life."
