True story of Father Flanagan's fight to build a home for orphaned boys.
Dir: Norman Taurog Cast: Spencer Tracy, Mickey Rooney, Henry Hull
Runtime: 96 mins Genre: Drama Rating: TV-G CC: Y
Oscar nominations (and winners):
ACTOR -- Spencer Tracy {"Father Flanagan"} (WINNER)
DIRECTING -- Norman Taurog
OUTSTANDING PRODUCTION -- Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer
WRITING (Original Story) -- Dore Schary, Eleanore Griffin (WINNER)
WRITING (Screenplay) -- John Meehan, Dore Schary
Trivia: Father Edward Flanagan, who died almost ten years after this movie was released, was the first person ever to live to see somebody win an Oscar for portraying him.
Trivia: When shooting began on the movie Mickey Rooney repeatedly tried to steal scenes by fumbling with a handkerchief, pulling faces and other bits of business. This so annoyed Spencer Tracy that he threatened to have Rooney thrown off the movie unless he behaved.
Trivia: The day after Spencer Tracy won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in this film, an MGM publicist released a statement - without consulting Tracy first - that the actor would donate his Oscar to the real Boys Town in Nebraska. Tracy agreed to make the donation if the Academy would send him a replacement Oscar. When the replacement arrived, the engraving on the award read: "Best Actor - Dick Tracy."

MUSIC (Song) -- "The Trolley Song," Music and Lyrics by Ralph Blane and Hugh Martin
WRITING (Screenplay) -- Irving Brecher, Fred F. Finklehoffe
Trivia: Following Margaret O'Brien's rapid ascent to stardom, her mother believed they were entitled to a significant raise, and she used this film as leverage, realizing how integral the role of Tootie was to the story. MGM raised the ante by announcing the casting of Sharon McManus in O'Brien's place. McManus was the daughter of a studio electrician and the brass went so far as to fit her with costumes, assuming this would pressure O'Brien's mother into accepting their terms. But she held fast, and MGM was ultimately forced to concede to her demands for the salary increase. Once production was underway, O'Brien was filming a scene when McManus' father, who was employed on the film, intentionally dropped a heavy lighting instrument from the catwalk to the sound stage floor, narrowly missing the pint-sized star. He was taken away and briefly admitted to a mental institution for his deed.

Trivia: Fredi Washington (Peola at 19) was a light-skinned African-American. After playing this role, she was criticized by some in the Black community who labored under the misconception that the actress herself practiced self-hatred and would rather 'pass' herself off as white. In fact, Ms. Washington was an avid civil-rights activist. And although cast as the 19 year-old daughter of Louise Beavers (Delilah), the 31-year old Fredi Washington was less than a year younger than her onscreen mother. She was, however, considerably slimmer than the matronly Beavers, which enabled the pair to "pass" as mother and daughter.

Among these are the jail cell where the real Manny Balestrero was incarcerated, the caretakers at the country inn and the inn itself, and the sanitarium where Manny's wife was committed. As much as Hitchcock hated filming his movies on location, he felt that authenticity was crucial to this film due to its real-life "elements that are stranger than all the fiction" he had filmed in his movies prior to this.
