Trivia: Diane Ladd's daughter Laura Dern can be seen in the final diner scene. She is the little blonde girl with glasses sitting at the end of the counter eating an ice cream cone. As Dern would recall years later, it was after the 19th take, and exactly that many cones consumed that director Martin Scorsese informed Ladd that if her daughter could do that without throwing up, she had to be an actress.

In 1933 Louisiana, a family of African American sharecroppers endure racism and injustice when their father is convicted of a petty crime and sent to a prison camp.

Oscar nominations:
ACTOR -- Paul Winfield {"Nathan Lee Morgan"}
ACTRESS -- Cicely Tyson {"Rebecca Morgan"}
BEST PICTURE -- Robert B. Radnitz, Producer
WRITING (Screenplay--based on material from another medium) -- Lonne Elder, III

Trivia: Cicely Tyson commented in a TCM interview that director Martin Ritt's cinematographer (principal cameraman), while shooting the famous "homecoming sequence" with Tyson and co-star Paul Winfield, was so moved by their performances that he was certain he missed framing the action properly in the shots and respectfully asked them to do the difficult scene again. They obliged, but later examination of daily rushes revealed that they got shot and acting perfect the first time, and the first take was a print.

But Sidney Lumet was concerned about Finch's Australian accent. Finch won the part after sending Lumet a recording of himself reading the New York Times with a perfect American accent.

In 1960 he hired an unknown Liverpool band called The Beatles to accompany one of his lesser stars, Johnny Gentle, on a tour of Scotland, but he decided not to take the Beatles on as clients because he was only interested in handling solo singers, not groups.

Dir: Bert Stern Cast: Louis Armstrong, Mahalia Jackson, Gerry Mulligan

Trivia: In Hilton Als' 2008 New Yorker review of the documentary Anita O'Day: The Life of a Jazz Singer (2007), Als reports that Anita O'Day was high on heroin during her performance at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival, and she was unaware that her performance was filmed until later. Warner was fed up after a long argument and told De Toth he could make the movie any way he wanted, but it had to be in two weeks, which suited De Toth since he finished under schedule and under budget with his preferred star, Sterling Hayden.

&pp=ygUacGhpbGFkZWxwaGlhIHN0b3J5IHRyYWlsZXI%3D

Socialite Tracy Lord is getting married, and an honest reporter is there to get the story. It's a dull assignment until Tracy's ex-husband shows up, with a thirst for alcohol and a not-quite extinguished torch for his lovely one-time wife.

Trivia: The film was shot in eight weeks, and required no retakes. During the scene where James Stewart hiccups when drunk, you can see Cary Grant looking down and grinning. Since the hiccup wasn't scripted, Grant was on the verge of breaking out laughing and had to compose himself quickly. Stewart (apparently spontaneously) thought of hiccuping in the drunk scene, without telling Grant. When he began hiccuping, Grant turned to Stewart, saying, "Excuse me." The scene required only one take.

WRITING (Screenplay--Original) -- Andrew L. Stone

Trivia: While making this film on location, Doris Day repeatedly complained to her husband Martin Melcher, whose first film as a producer this was, that she felt ill and needed a rest. He insisted that she adhere to her Christian Science beliefs - and the film's shooting schedule - and "have faith" that whatever was ailing her would pass. Once shooting was completed, Day consulted her doctor in Beverly Hills, and discovered a large ovarian tumor, which required her to have a hysterectomy.

A San Francisco couple travels to France in search of Pablo Picasso.
Dir: Serge Bourguignon Cast: Albert Finney, Yvette Mimieux, Luis Miguel Dominguin

Trivia: Serge Bourguignon was never officially credited as director on this film. His original footage was edited and his "cut" was deemed unacceptable for submission to Warner-7 Arts. Robert Sallin and his production company, Kaleidoscope Productions, were hired to re-shoot the film. Some of Bourguignon's footage was used in the completely re-structured final version. Sallin received the final and sole director's credit.
