today is robert osborne's b-day.

i didnt realize that when i started posting to fb today about the morning movie.

made the following 3 posts.

srsly, "hollywood canteen" is a wonderful movie.
they dragged out an old robert osborne intro for it, telling how this was basically a true story. about a uso canteen that hollywood opened to thank the troops.
what a cast.
what a story. finely polished script.
bette davis was apparently the force behind it all.

great music, too. big bands. roy rogers, lol, singing "dont fence me in". i had to sing along w that one. one of the discs i have repeated a brazillion times is an aids fundraiser of cole porter tunes. david byrne does a great version of it. the drums. oh. the drums.

a good old b&w hollywood show.

i dont think i have ever been so excited by the credits of a movie before. dont even have time to list.

i've been watching a lot of movies w nothing but the plague in the news. been saving my sanity, such as it is.

i know i can but it's as a cable customer.

have seen several bette davis pics lately, and enjoyed them immensely. never saw "watch on the rhine" till the other day. what a fine pic. what a lovely production.
i didnt really appreciate her earlier work, or her beauty, rly, as i grew up w baby jane.

i would miss all the little features if i watched online, tho. they have a really great team. they always leave me itching to see the movie.

it's been a while.

I know some channels' website state that they are available to view online thru another carrier.

In fact, I just got that msg. online today when trying to watch freespeechtv which is a first- maybe cuz I'm using an older, backup computer now temporarily.

- TCM is terrific, I like their features as well and miss the perspective and warmth that Robert Osborne brought to the programming.

In the last years I've really learned to appreciate Bette Davis much more. 'Watch On The Rhine" is very good, I first saw it several years ago when they were running movies from the Nazi/fascist period.

Growing up I also associated Davis with "Baby Jane," ick! I've read that she initially resisted doing the film for that very reason, people would remember and associate her with it.

4. ken burn's series is on pbs now.

late sunday night. i catch it if i tune in for 'call the midwife'
it's excellent. i have seen it before, and am enjoying a second go round.

Well done series; I met Ken Burns when he gave a lecture at the National Archives where I was working some years ago. The man never ages!

I loved Robert Osborne and still feel he's the soul of TCM.

And I'm loving the reairing of The Roosevelts: An Intimate History on PBS.

Incidentally, I also never miss Call the Midwife, which had a classic movie plot point the other week (everyone was excited about The Sound of Music).

And I find PBS stations do air classic movies regularly. Recent offerings have included Sorry, Wrong Number and A Man for All Seasons.

8. i do love all the new hosts.

silent sundays is an eye opener for me. i've only stayed up late enough to watch one, but the little feature they run about it is amazing.

6. I watched a tribute to him last year on TCM

and he said the most difficult actor to interview was Mitchum (he would talk and talk until the cameras would turn on and then he would go silent, just to be a dick). Mickey Rooney scared him when he was getting very, very upset telling a story and Robert was afraid for a bit. I saw the clips and don't blame him at all, Rooney acted crazy.
