(5,604 posts)The guy is very talented but has overused his bemused outsider shtick too many times: Fear and Loathing, Rum Diaries, Ed Wood, Dead man. The last movie of his that I've seen where his performance really blew me away was Blow.

(63,300 posts)while he's a talented guy, I find his "costumed" performances weak.

(2,032 posts)that lately he seems to be going for roles where he can wear a disguise or lots of makeup....Willy Wonka, Mad Hatter, Jack Sparrow, a white faced Barnabas Collins, and soon Tonto, who also has his face painted. Well, whatever the reason, I am a huge fan and will see them all eventually.

(14,807 posts)going just churning out fun films with a sort of "I don't give a crap attitude". I actually don't mind. It is kind of funny.

(8,217 posts)I had an idea for a new Lone Ranger which is gritty and has a relationship similar to Mani and the Chevalier in "Brotherhood of the Wolves" but seeing this new one coming up...
What a waste.

(64,612 posts)Consider Finding Neverland, Fear and Loathing, Dead Man, Blow, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, etc., to name just a few.
He's landed quite a few lucrative roles, and his first outing as Jack Sparrow was unlike anything he'd done before, so I don't know that your complaint works overall.
However, much of his work with the the chronically overpraised "director" Tim Burton is indeed repetitive, outside of Ed Wood. Wonka is close to the bottom of the barrel, along with Dark Shadows.
Late to the party here, but I couldn't resist chiming in

(18 posts)But many (including myself) love him for it! Add Charlie and The Chocolate Factory to that list!
He played a slightly different character in Sleepy Hollow too btw.

(21,925 posts)I really liked him in Polanski's the Ninth Gate of several years ago and I thought Edward Scissorhands was truly unique and fun. For me, he was good in From Hell, Ed Wood, Donnie Brasco, and Sleepy Hollow. His more recent stuff, though, isn't quite my cup of tea, although I don't think it's his roles I dislike as much as the films themselves. I can't stand those pirate movies in spite of Depp, I didn't like Willy Wonka, I hated Dark Shadows in spite of Depp, and I refuse to even consider watching the Lone Ranger, not because of him but because I'm sick of Hollywood movies either being remakes of comic books, old TV series, or better but older originals.
I saw an old movie a few nights ago, Nightfall, a great film noir, with Aldo Ray and Brian Keith. Thank God for old movies. I loved them when they were new movies and I love them now.
