Finished another 9x12 pastel today.

On UArt 400, mounted to mat board. I have learned how to do this so I can use wet underpaintings without the paper buckling. I’m finding the mounted paper so much more enjoyable to paint on!

Thanks for looking!

(Fall my favorite season!).

I don't usually like pastels, though I love watercolors. I don't consider these colors pastel? I usually think of pale pink, blue, green...

How long did it take to finish? I took a mixed media class a few weeks ago. We used watercolors, acrylics, gold leaf, & white gel pens. It was fun & interesting to see what kinds of materials artists use.

Did a watercolor underpainting, then did the pastels on top…I guess I worked about 6-8 hours on this in total?

I tried pastels this week and made a smudgy mess that I had to throw away. Guess I'll have to do some studying or take a class.

Those reflections, the shimmering light, the simplification of the trees, that foreground vivid blue--just lovely.

You have a great knack for capturing beautiful moments in landscapes. I always feel like you include the viewer in your pastels because you create a wonderful mood in your depictions. You pick the perfect place and time of day that captures what people want to see and experience in nature. From your wonderful palette of seasonal colors to your attention to details from the foreground to the distant background, with atmospheric softness. I think you do a good job including some sharp details such as the bare white twigs on the bank of the river mixed in with shadows and sunlit vegetation of other plants. I love that particular detail!

You do the same with all the trees and colorful leaves, having each tree stand out from it’s neighbors with the use of contrasting colors and shapes. And finally your depiction of light and air on the upper right corner give your painting a sublime feeling as your colors lighten and blend into a light sky. Your technique is excellent! You always manage to make me feel like I’m there because of the feeling of sublime calmness, as if you picked the ultimate perfect spot to capture the essence of peacefulness. Thanks! I always feel treated to the best of nature in your pastels! Gazing at this is like a healing meditation. All the viewer is required to do is to get lost in the scene.
