Wow, just got some hate mail about my Inuit mask paintings.

Telling me that not only was he offended by my cultural appropriation, but my art was crappy. I have nothing but respect for indigenous art and was merely committing it to canvas. Sheesh!

not that it should have come from anywhere at all. Is it "cultural appropriation" to create art based on anything that doesn't come from your own culture? That would be pretty limiting - it would mean that nobody could ever make their own art based on another culture's art. It isn't cultural appropriation unless you are claiming the underlying art as your own creation. And it seems to me that the time and effort involved in depicting the thing shows respect for it. "Crappy," as applied to art, is completely subjective, but in this case the complainer is just throwing in an extra insult. I like the paintings; they're colorful and fun. Illegitimi non carborundum.

It just took me by surprise. I responded to him by saying: You know what they say about opinions...

I worked with members from more than a half dozen tribes on the issue of Native American names, logos, and mascots for Colorado high schools and sports on a governor's appointed committee years ago to try to identify and gain consensus on which to address and how. There was agreement on many, but on some... anything but. I could not always predict which would continue to "get a pass," even though all were on the table for potential change.

I have also worked in the past on health and communicable disease issues with tribes in Colorado, Montana, the Dakotas, and the Southwest and learned early on how critically important to engage with each new setting and not assume plans or strategies or basic linguistic wording apply from the last similar effort.

So probably many would find no problem with your masks, but you might want to include some kind of explanatory statement as to your motivations and intentions for the effort.

I've posted them all already. So to go back and outline my intentions would be after the fact. I was truly amazed by the diversity of styles. I really did the paintings for myself. They're not for sale. So I'm not profiting by doing them. Anyway, life goes on!

So stuff like that doesn't really bother me. It just sort of took me by surprise.
