A thrift-store Picasso?

As Zach Bodish traced his usual route through the thrift store last week, passing the metal shelves of castaway posters and photographs, one word caught his eye.

Picasso.

It was on a framed poster, alongside a crudely etched face and a French phrase advertising a 1958 exhibition of Pablo Picasso’s work. Bodish, who figured it was a nice reproduction, paid the $14.14 price at the Volunteers of America in Clintonville and went home.

But as the 46-year-old University District resident researched the piece online, he noticed a red scribble in the corner of his thrift-store find, the same place where Picasso penned a scarlet signature on some original versions.

“I started shaking a little bit,” said Bodish, who has an interest in art but admits he is by no means a collector.

“I realized it wasn’t going to make me rich, but still, how often do you find a Picasso?”

... of finding a rare comic - Superman #1 - at a yardsale.

Funny thing is when I used to go to yardsales as a kid in the 70s I found old comics all the time - still have many of them. I just don't see comics at yardsales anymore.

in Homedale, Idaho.
It needed restoration, and was in pretty poor shape.
It cost me 15 bucks.
It is MESMERIZING!

I did some research on the piece, and even talked and exchanged letters with the artist, Stan Bennett (died last fall).

Here is a you-tube interview with the artist, showing some of his work.

The piece I have is very like the large marble machine at the very end of the video.

Mine is one of Stans early works : One of the 17 he made for "The Sweet Factory", a candy store in Nevada.

(The Sweet Factory paid 3 grand for the sculpture in the early seventies)

I wonder how a person learns to make one of those. Just trial and error, I spose.
