When you open a new can of tennis balls, you can get a whiff of thi particular odor. I don’t know how to describe it, but it’s quite noticeable and specific to tennis balls. I wonder whether that is safe for dogs. Humans, of course, don’t put tennis balls in their mouths. But dogs do, and is it safe for them? Just asking.

I would surmise that smell is because of the materials the tennis balls are made from. Just like that "new car smell" if from a combination of materials used in construction of the cars interior. As the plastics, leathers, trim, etc., outgas you slowly lose that aroma over time.

I used to take one of my doggos to the dog park and it was loaded with tennis balls. Tennis balls covered in the filthiest of everything imaginable!! The dogs didn't seem to care much!
