But did you ever read James Michener's work on the early eastern seaboard state of Maryland?--Chesapeake was the name of the book. Michener, ever so detailed in research and description, told about the how the male Blue Crab would cover the female with his body after she molted. He would stay there sheltering her until her shell became hard again. That's what the video reminded me of, so I would have accepted it as reality if the male stork were sheltering her with his body. But how, in nature, could birds have evolved to find woven cloth? Come on.

I'm not positive it's real, but The Dodo seems pretty good about interviewing the sources for their posts. I'd be more inclined to think he's just bringing a likely piece of nesting material, rather than ascribing the anthromorphic motive given in the tweet, though.

The boot to the head was a nice touch.

For the last several years, a stork named Addi and his mate, Antonella, have been nesting atop a chimney in Henneckenrode, Germany. In that time, the pair have had many baby storks, all of whom successfully fledged.

e.V. Silke Feser, a stork enthusiast with Nette-Störche e.V., has been monitoring Addi and Antonella over the years via a camera aimed at their nest. There, she’s seen the couple work in partnership to bring each new generation into the world, with Addi tending to Antonella as she rests atop their eggs.

Recently, however, Feser’s camera captured something that was entirely new to her.

On a chilly morning with dark clouds overhead, Addi was seen returning to the nest with a surprising present for Antonella — a makeshift blanket with which to cover his mate.
