The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsFinally, old comic book ads I said I'd post
I meant to get to it sooner, but things haven't gone quite as planned. Back on track now
Marked50 posted about old comic books and ads, and several DUers enjoyed the post: https://democraticunderground.com/10182269461
I got some of my comics out and took a few pictures of the ads:

I never did get there, the closest I ever came was Rye Playland.

(13,939 posts)Karate / Jiu-Jitsu, No. 72 -- Mostly instructions on fighting dirty, including a pressure-point chart. Very cool.
Throw Your Voice, No. 737 -- A small folded box of aluminized cardboard wrapped in gauze tape that you were somehow supposed to put in your mouth without choking.
Moneymaker, A135 -- A magic trick, sort of like a cigarette rolling machine, that worked just fine.
X-Ray Specs, No. FL7 -- Cardboard spectacles with film holes in the center that just made things look weird.
Joy Buzzer, No. 239 -- A clever piece of machinery with a button that caused a mainspring to vibrate when pressed.

(22,815 posts)I didn't choke, but it didn't work. lol
I didn't order it, but I have a joy buzzer somewhere, which still works.
Thanks for sharing!

(1,565 posts)I remember each and every one of those items. Could only afford to buy a few. All of them a rip-off. Thanks for the post Marthe48.

(41,193 posts)I have a few strong memories of comics I saw when I was only 4-6 years old that I hadn't seen in ages. Was able to find them, and check out details of the stories I had forgotten, a year or two ago. Some were as interesting as I remember, others were pretty dumb. Oh, all the ads were sooooo familiar ! Get your own working submarine ! A seven-foot tall Frankenstein ! When you read the descriptions carefully (as an adult) you realize they're actually describing junk. I never ordered the "Sea-Monkeys", but the ads were so ridiculous I knew they had to be lies.

And of course "the" archive:

There's lots of junk you never heard of, and Disney comics seem to show up in foreign languages only. Use the search function; you won't find everything you're looking for.

(22,815 posts)I have several dozen old comics. We were like pack rats, always hanging on to something.
I bet the archive you shared would be quite a walk down memory lane.

I liked looking at the sale pages and wishing I could get things.
