3. There was a girl in the neighborhood

She was nice but a little slow. We had a slip and slide set up and convinced her to have a go at it. She didn't so much run and slide down it as run down it. She immediately slipped and landed on her back HARD and then slid the rest of the way down awkwardly. She was stunned but uninjured, it was funny at the time.

5. Thank you for sharing your story, Shermann. I hope she wasn't hurt. I don't see the slip and slides anymore.

4. I remember SnS, but I don't think we ever had one. Instead -

- one of my older brothers created Butt Burners. As we were Air Force brats, we moved every 3 years or so; lots of big moving boxes. In '68 we moved into a hilly area in Chicopee, Massachusetts. My enterprising elder sibling carted the flattened boxes out back to a moderately inclined stretch, nailed the boxes in a strip on the hill, being careful to over lap them over the nail heads. Then, stealing Mom's roll of waxed paper, rubbed all the boxes down and shining a piece of cardboard as well to serve as the sled to sit on. The first run down, he spun, slipped off the sled, catching his pants on a flap edge which pulled them down a bit and, voila! Butt Burners were born! Had lots of fun on them until the first good rain.

7. Funny You Brought That Up

I never had one, but my sister, who is 11 years younger than me, had one. Then, my mom & dad put an above ground pool in the backyard, so the Slip 'n' Slide went bye-bye.
But, I just watched the first episode of Hard Knocks about the Chicago Bears.
The new QB never played baseball, so he never learned to slide, which he needs to do for his own protection.
The coaches set up a Slip'n'Slide for him to learn. All the quarterbacks were doing it, so you've got these 225# adults playing on it.
It was funny.

11. An important thing to have in the neighborhood when I was growing up.

My Dad was career Army, so I spent a significant portion of my childhood living in government housing. He was an officer, so we mostly lived in single-family dwellings with front and back yards, etc. But for obvious reasons, no one had an in-ground swimming pool. And above-ground swimming pools were tiresome to fill and empty, and made moving (every couple of years if you're in the Army) difficult.

So at least one family in nearly every neighborhood owned a Slip & Slide, and all the neighborhood kids would come over on hot summer days to have fun and stay cool. In my neighborhood, the family with the S&S lived two doors over, and their house was on an incline, so they set theirs up as a downhill run. It was like a very small water park.

Great memories.

15. Chipped front tooth because of it!

That tooth still gives me problems!

There was a hill between houses that we NEEDED to put the s&s on. At the bottom of the hill was a patch of grass and then a concrete patio against a brick wall. Front teeth ended up on said wall.
