Relaxing with a vodka and tonic this after.
Had a spectacular day in clinic yesterday. Anybody auditing my chart notes will discover that Im a damned good clinician. Take THAT, office politics drones! I am really fucking good at this!
Hope everyone is having a great weekend.
I love you all

(214 posts)I also worked in medicine (now retired); I am very proud of my career. However, the paperwork burden and bureaucracy of the final years was a mental drag. The for profit systems are a complete disaster for ensuring good care. It was much more rewarding 30 years ago 😏.

(25,026 posts)I retired in March of 2021, after 45 years as a pediatric nurse practitioner. The last 8 years I worked were made miserable by electronic medical records. It felt as if I spent more time taking care of the damn computer than I did taking care of the patients. I spent 2-3 hours of unpaid time at home every night getting my charting done because I needed every minute of the face-to-face time with patients to deliver the quality of care to which I held myself, and I was a fanatic for accurate and thorough charting, which is very time consuming. Most of the preloaded point-and-click templates are full of inaccuracies, IMO. Over 8 years, that meant I had "donated" over $100,000 worth of time to my employers.
If I had worked 10 more weeks, I would have been at my practice for 25 years, which was a goal to which I aspired for quite some time. It got to the point, unfortunately, where it just wasn't enough fun anymore, and 10 more weeks seemed like 10 more years. I was done. Except for newborns, young babies, and first time parents, I don't miss it.
What was our specialty? I hope you are enjoying retirement as much as I am.

(214 posts)I did nuclear medicine for 44 years around the Philadelphia and SE PA area. I continue to get the difficulties of medicine these days through my daughter, who is a nurse 😏.
