The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsWhat's your favorite song from your year of birth?
This one is a little more challenging because you probably weren't actively into the top 40 when you were a newborn.
I'm a 1973 model. Reviewing the top 100 songs from that year, I'm going to give honorable mentions to You're So Vain (Carly Simon), Shambala (Three Dog Night) and Kodachrome (Paul Simon).
But my pick is this one:

(134,770 posts)Til the end of time is a popular song written by lyricist Buddy Kaye and composer Ted Mossman and published in 1945. The melody is based on Frédéric Chopin's Polonaise in A flat major, Op. 53, the "Polonaise héroique".[2]
A number of recordings of the song were made in 1945. The biggest hit was by Perry Como.

Anyway, I've never revealed my age here and it's not due to an insecure reason. I'm mixing up several years from 1973 to 1978.
Enjoy!

(68,460 posts)'56 here. Lots of Elvis released that year, but I actively dislike him & his songs.
Because of my dad I heard a lot of 50s cool jazz, but I wouldn't know which of those was from '56.
Overall, I think rock & roll of the mid 50s was crap, so none of that stuff either.
I'd have to go through a list of hits from that year. There's probably some song I like, but nothing that pops immediately to mind.
True Dough
(19,033 posts)Would be interested to know of your choice(s). Also, what was it about "The King" that you found so grating?
ProfessorGAC
(68,460 posts)The very earliest stuff less so, but still seems fake
I don't think he's that good a singer & I found his "influenced by this & that" to be a shortcoming, not a strength; as he isn't really committed to the way he plans to sing a tune.
Later, I thought he adopted the worship of his cult members like some shady televangelist.
The "effort" in his shows seemed fake, with the silly karate stuff, and I don't hear effort in his voice.
And, I take out on him the over-the-top fealty of too much of his fandom.
Finally, two of his hits are among the creepiest lyrics ever, and his fans stupidly swooned over words they didn't actually listen to.
I think that's plenty, without getting into technical criticisms.
True Dough
(19,033 posts)but I still like "In the Ghetto," if only because my parents were so fond of that song and played it often.

And this one, especially given the connection to Monk. (OH, this YouTube link is the whole album. I mean just the first song.)

(493 posts)i did okay playing in a concert band setting, but I was only good enough at marching to hit my marks. "Peter Gunn", (despite the marching band horror experience,) is one of my absolute favorite songs. I also got to hear Henry Mancini's orchestra play it while Henry Mancini directed it. One of my life's highlights!

There's a four-month window there that doesn't fit into any category, really. I'll be 79 years old on August 30.

It looks like my choices are either surfing music, ballads sung by women in updos, or folk music.
I don't quite know which to choose.
on edit: I went with the updos:
