Martin Luther King, Jr.: "Let us all hope that the dark clouds of racial prejudice will soon pass away"
Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and like we do every year in honor of Dr. Kings memory, Im posting an excerpt from his Letter From Birmingham Jail.
This years selection is a set of passages from the concluding paragraphs of the letter. Here, Dr. King is expressing his wish to his fellow clergymen that he will have the opportunity to meet them in person as faith leaders, and openly dreaming of a future in which inclusion, freedom, and tolerance are the norm. Let us all hope that the dark clouds of racial prejudice will soon pass away and the deep fog of misunderstanding will be lifted from our fear drenched communities, the closing paragraph says.
Those words feel particularly apt right now.
Never before have I written so long a letter. Im afraid it is much too long to take your precious time. I can assure you that it would have been much shorter if I had been writing from a comfortable desk, but what else can one do when he is alone in a narrow jail cell, other than write long letters, think long thoughts and pray long prayers?
