Right wing radicals see the devastating fires in Los Angeles as a tragedy they can exploit to spread their anti-science

As a girl growing up in Arcadia a century ago, my mother would watch brothers Chet, Frank and John head off each fall to fight fires in the San Gabriel Mountains.

The fires, fanned by Santa Ana winds, scorched high slopes. The menfolk returned animated and my domineering grandfather had to fall silent and hear out “the boys.”

The fires of 2025 are of a vastly greater dimension.

The Santa Ana winds still blow, but today’s fires are fanned by man.

Not much in the article supports the headline.

Trump has blamed the Southern California fires on “incompetence” of local and state governments.

Elon Musk has chimed in with an attack on “nonsensical over-regulation,” claiming that the cause of the immense property destruction from the fires was a shortage of water.”
