Excerpts: "New Yorkers, I’m going to explain why you should – must – vote YES on Proposition 1 when you vote on Election Day or before (early voting begins on Saturday, October 26). But first, I’m going to tell you HOW to do it...
"It’s easy to overlook ballot referendums. That’s because after you fill out your very-familiar-looking ballot, with the candidates listed horizontally by party, you have to do something else to find and vote on the referendum. That is, TURN THE BALLOT OVER! Sounds simple, and it is, but you’d be surprised how many people rush out without doing this simple act...
"Prop 1 is an Equal Rights Amendment for New York State. Believe it or not, in the current New York State Constitution, there are explicit protections against racial and religious discrimination, but not for any other form of discrimination. Prop 1 provides such protections. If passed, it will establish constitutional protections against discrimination based on ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, and sex – including sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy and pregnancy outcomes, and reproductive healthcare and autonomy.
"One way to think about it: want to keep Republican legislators out of your doctor’s appointment? Then, please – turn that ballot over – and vote YES on Prop 1."
