Vance defends spreading claims that Haitian migrants are eating pets
(NPR) Sen. JD Vance stood by his false claim that Haitian migrants were eating pets in Springfield, Ohio an unsupported story that former President Donald Trump has also echoed on the debate stage and on social media.
During a Sunday interview on CNN, the Ohio senator and Republican vice presidential nominee said his evidence for this claim was "the first-hand accounts of my constituents." He then went on to defend the dissemination of this false story.
The American media totally ignored this stuff until Donald Trump and I started talking about cat memes," Sen. Vance said. "If I have to create stories so that the American media actually pays attention to the suffering of the American people, then that's what I'm going to do."

My name is John Legend, and I was born as John. R Stevens from a place called Springfield, Ohio. Springfield, Ohio you may have heard of Springfield, Ohio, this week.
In fact, if you watch the debate, we were discussed by our presidential candidates, including a very special, interesting man named Donald J. Trump.
Now, Springfield has had a large influx of Haitian immigrants who come to our city.
SNIP...
But of late, during the Biden administration, there have been more jobs that opened up. More manufacturing jobs, more plants, factories that needed employees and were ready to hire people.
So, we had a lot of job opportunities, and we didn't have enough people in our town of 60,000 people to fill those jobs.

Is that going to be a working solution for them to swing the campaign in their direction? In this now short time period, no, but they will continue on out past their election loss.
We cant look the other way and laugh!

(6,216 posts)Ones that make it illegal to lie on the campaign trail. Ones, that make it a major felony to create such public danger. If someone gets hurt and there is a clear trail from the perp back to crap like this, there needs to be legislation that covers punishment for it. And, that punishment needs to have teeth, not just some slap in the little finger with a wet noodle.

(13,540 posts)1) Make up a lie, and spread it around.
2) People hear the lie, and then, fearing it's true, repeat it (e.g. "I heard..."
3) Claim you continue to spread the lie because people are (now) talking about it, even while...
4) ... acknowledging that it's a lie!
#4 in the cycle is kind of new for Republicans. They all used to pretend their lies were the truth, sometimes toeing the party line with a nudge and a wink. And make no mistake -- many of them actually do believe their own bullshit. But this whole "Yeah, it's a lie, so what?" is a weird new discourse, even for Republicans.
