Harris or Trump? Once Again, Election Results Could Take a While.

(NY Times) -snip- For the second straight presidential election, it is becoming increasingly likely that there will be no clear and immediate winner on election night and that early returns could give a false impression of who will ultimately prevail.

Large swaths of Americans have changed their voting habits in recent years, relying increasingly on mail-in ballots, which take more time to count than those cast in person on Election Day. States with prolonged vote-counting processes, such as Arizona, have become suddenly competitive. And the race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump appears extremely close.

If a winner is not declared on election night, it will not necessarily point to failures in the process. More likely, it will be a result of the intense security measures required for counting mail-in ballots.

Election officials across the country are trying to telegraph to voters that waiting long hours or even days for a result is not unexpected in a close election. They are eager to counter conspiracy theorists who may seize on the uncertainty as evidence of fraud or malfeasance.

This is a recent phenomenon. Prior to 2000, election results were pretty much known on election night. Thanks to GWB and the ‘win at all cost, precedence and tradition be damned and let lawyers ball things up approach’, we’ve never healed. Now, every election is each teams hill to die on because every election is ‘the most important ever’! Rest assure, the 2032 election wil be the most important ever. So will 2036 then 2040 then 2044 and so on.

If I were in control of a state, election results would be required by law on election night. I’d have several days of early voting, all kinds of ways for mail-in voting. I’d have the absolute easiest ways for every eligible person to vote. Not one eligible voter would have an impediment to vote.

On top of that, I would allow vote counting of mail-in votinng at 12:01 AM on election day. No prelimary results could be released prior to polls closing.

But…upon the polls closing, all votes—no matter the method—must be in. That’s it. Votes are now counted.

It’s the trickling in of votes for days after the election that I wouldnt allow. Voting would be so easy in my state, this would not be an issue.

A man can dream! LOL
