Vice President Kamala Harris Should Pick Pete Buttigieg as Her Running Mate

The name of the game with this choice is to expand the electorate. He’s the guy to do it.

The Democrats’ new presumptive nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris, has a tough task before her: In less than one hundred days, she has to rebuild a fractured party while making the case that she’s best suited for the top job. The good news is that she doesn’t have to do it alone. There’s a deep bench of potential vice-presidential candidates to complement her strengths and counteract her weaknesses. She has a once-in-a-generation shot at choosing an expert communicator and campaigner who can litigate her case quickly and effectively, all while bringing in new voters. She should choose Pete Buttigieg as her running mate.

I worked for Barack Obama off and on through both campaigns and his two terms in office. He won the presidency—twice—in part because of his ability to raise policy expectations and expand the electorate, mobilizing record participation from young Americans and other communities historically left out of the political process. That’s where, in 2024, Pete Buttigieg comes in. A son of the Midwest, Buttigieg is a former Rust Belt Mayor, a polyglot, and a Navy veteran, and for the past three and a half years, he has served as secretary of transportation. He has the highest name recognition and favorability of anyone on Vice President Harris’s shortlist. In last week’s Marist poll, he was also the top pick for suburban and rural voters (after Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer, who says she is not interested in the job). Buttigieg also has a robust, intact fundraising and field network that hauled in $100 million during the last presidential cycle, largely through first-time donors.

But here’s where things get kicked up a notch: There is no other politician in either party who can effortlessly appear on Fox News and Bill Maher and TMZ Live. Buttigieg’s regular media interviews and viral congressional testimonies exemplify what an unafraid, sharply skilled leader he is. We shouldn’t underestimate the potential of this. Against manufactured chaos, he outlines policy and dismisses bad-faith questions without absolving his opponents of lessons in moral clarity. One example: Look at his refusal to take the bait on—and I feel very stupid as I’m typing this—a Fox News question about Marjorie Taylor Greene’s views on emasculation tied to electric vehicles. Buttigieg rejects false us-versus-them narratives. He’s respectful. He disarms with a physical smile and an intellectual shiv. Imagine him joining a President Harris for that version of America every day. Now imagine the bluster of J.D. Vance and Donald Trump.

Buttigieg’s engagement with voters who disagree with him gets results in practice, too. He won the 2020 Iowa caucuses by speaking regularly with moderate and conservative communities—without sacrificing his liberal policy positions. He ultimately won sixty-one of ninety-nine counties across the state, including those that flipped from Obama to Trump in the previous general election.

But again, we are truly blessed with another half dozen folks all ready for the job, ready to be President if necessary, and with unique individual strengths for the campaign trail.

gets along w/ everyone. I am highly impressed.

But I still have that feeling in the background that eh, I don't know... some of you know exactly what I mean. The world says they are ready for change, but I hesitate still (are they really? there are some that clearly are not). I still see the hate/etc., but to be fair, it's not near as much as it used to be, thank God. This could be just my long-seated paranoia kicking in from many years.

I don't worry about being attacked anymore, I don't worry about parking my car a little further down the street, since I am just as safe vs. parking right next door. Neighbors and friends are wonderful, and life is good. What else can I ask for?

I'm older and seen things, of how some were treated. But you're right, the younger generation is a different animal. They have been a source of inspiration to me as I view my younger friends and their gay relationships that are so genuine.

Both Kamala and Pete are exceptional speakers. Make that EXCEPTIONAL. I think they'll readily smackdown any comments from Trump, Vance or their minions. My personal pick is Kelly, but I think Kamala and Pete would win.

11. time to stop cuddling and catering to the bigots that have came out of the woodwork w/ tRUMP?

Immediately and too soon is not soon enough. I've seen enough of the bigotry come out of tRUMP and his foul mouth as well as the tRUMP camp that surrounds him, that I'm thoroughly disgusted more and more by the day.

This guy is a walking, living, breathing hate crime.

After we stomp these two jackasses into the ground come November, so deep that they won't find a trace of these two morons, I hope that allowing this insurrectionist to run again for the Nov. 2024 election will be viewed as a serious mistake by the powers that be (the Supreme Court again and they won't recognize their mistake), and more serious effects to make legislation stand should the moron ever attempt to run again for an elected office.

Keeping tRUMP on the ticket will be seriously recognized as a serious mistake by the repugs that are still around the former GOP (they're all running as fast away as they can). How in the world can these people allow such a toxic, un-American mess to ever be on the top of their ticket? Are they blind/mental/incapacitated? The state of Colorado was right, to not allow this toxic, disgusting human being (if you can call him that) run.

OH and I'm sure the remaining "rank and file" repukes who still exist now REALLY regret keeping that traitorous fuck on......yup

hanging w/ this endless loser? I sometimes wonder if these repugs are mentally damaged in some way? It does make one wonder.

In the long run, I think this disturbing mistake to allow tRUMP to run again is going to destroy their tickets all across the Country, that we will pick up some seats in Congress, and perhaps cement more of a favorable position in both houses of Congress. We do have our work cut out for us, fix the Supreme Court somehow (I've seen the debates on if we do some things, the Supreme Court majority will simply void them).

Enhance voting rights so red states won't be able to tailor their elections to suit red state legislators. I'm sure that there are tons of other things that can be done, but of course our primary goal is to wipe tRUMP and tRUMPism off the map for good.

Easy way around that perhaps, expand the Court, if the S. Court won't accept any ethics like everyone does.

they KNOW more and more people (especially younger voters) are finding their policies very unappealing but repukes will NOT change - they will only become WORSE
