How a blunder by a respected medical journal is fueling an anti-vaccine lie

The paper published by the respected British Medical Journal earlier this month was eye-opening, to say the least. It questioned why excess deaths in Western countries remained unusually elevated during the COVID-19 pandemic even after vaccines were introduced in 2021.

The implication seemed clear: Rather than reducing cases and deaths, the COVID vaccines had fueled the tragic tide.

That finding was picked up within 48 hours by the Telegraph, a conservative British daily. It leaped across the Atlantic Ocean to the New York Post, a part of the Murdoch media empire, one day later.

Since then, it has been widely spread on social media by the anti-vaccination camp. The repetitions have become increasingly febrile, with some tweets blaming the vaccines for tens of millions of deaths.

Here’s what you need to know: There is no truth to this finding, or to the anti-vaccine camp’s interpretation of the BMJ paper.

1. Interesting that a leading cause of excess mortality was not discussed--the backlog of diagnosis & treatment

for cancers and other serious chronic disease during the peak of COVID-19 that persists to this day. Of course their other arguments are excellent (more virulent variants in 2021, the obvious long period required for vaccines to reach a significant percentage of recipients and then for immunity to develop and be maintained, the lifting of many isolation restrictions and thus increase in exposure, and on and on.

It is one of the saddest aspects of this part of my life that science and medicine and those who participate in delivering healthcare or implementing public health precautions have been so demonized and subjected to constant media and societal lies. These are among those whose efforts came at the expense of personal lives and their own families--responding as they had always done to a situation that was clearly life and death emergency.

May KARMA catch up with all who willfully spread these lies and refused to listen to any but those promulgating and spreading their own conspiracies.

2. In the world of vaccines MRNA science has been a BIG game changer. Vaccines of this kind

are going to revolutionize medicine and in fact already are.
People that don’t want to take any MRNA vaccines will probably have to skip most
treatments for cancer as more and more of them are based in MRNA science.
MRNA and the Crisper gene therapy are changing treatments for genetic illnesses too.
Let’s see how steadfast non MRNA they are when it comes to a glioblastoma or other deadly cancers.
Most of them think by skipping a Covid shot that they can lean on herd immunity.

COVID is here to stay so go get your boosters folks.

3. "I don't need a vaccine. I never get sick."

I've heard that from more patients than I care to count. It would be ludicrous if it didn't result in such a high body count; people coming in to my clinic, ostensibly seeking medical advice, and then rejecting that advice when I give it to them.

No one is going to force you, my dude. But if you're not going to take my medical advice, don't waste my time by walking in the door in the first place. I've got plenty to do already, and patients who will take my medical advice.

5. It must be equally discouraging and maddening to deal with this prevailing mindset every day.

I am fairly sure that corporate intervention in medical care is a big contributor to this.

If you only have 15 minutes to give a patient the complete care they need, including detailed pros and cons, that leads to confusion.

If you only get to see the same doctor for, in some cases, less than a full year of care before there is a new white coat in the exam room, that leads to distrust.

How did we get here for the average patient?

I am lucky that years ago, I decided to avoid corporate medicine. I decided to go to a small local clinic owned by a doctor who chooses to live here and enjoy the things this region has to offer for their families off time.

I have been with him for over thirty years, and he continues to offer the best primary care. I still need to see a specialist, but they are always chosen with his input on their pros and cons.

In all fairness, I know that my former experience as a military medic makes our consultation more informative. Together, we make the decision about the direction of my healthcare.
