Graham Platner officially drops out of the Maine Senate race

Source: NBC News

Jul. 10, 2026, 4:55 PM EDT

Embattled Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner on Friday officially dropped out of the race, paving the way for Democrats to select a new nominee just days before the deadline.

“I write to formally withdraw my candidacy for United States Senate,” Platner wrote in a letter to Maine’s division of elections that he shared on X. Maine’s Secretary of State office, which oversees elections, confirmed receipt of the letter.

Platner announced on Wednesday that he planned to withdraw from the race, but he had yet to file the necessary paperwork to do so with Maine’s Secretary of State.

Democrats have until July 27 at 5 p.m. to find a replacement that will face Republican Sen. Susan Collins in November in one of the nation’s most competitive Senate elections. Candidates must formally declare by July 15 at 5 p.m.

AUGUSTA, MAINE – The Secretary of State’s Office today confirmed that a formal notice has been received from U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner. A public declaration is not an official withdrawal, and a candidate must formally withdraw in writing to the Elections office, including signature.

Because the candidate officially withdrew before 5 p.m. of the 2nd Monday in July (July 13, 2026), his name will not appear on the ballot, and his political party may replace him. The deadline for the party to name a replacement is the 4th Monday in July (July 27, 2026). Maine Statute does not address how a replacement candidate may be chosen by a party, only that the candidate filling the vacancy must be a “qualified person.” Announcements about how a replacement candidate will be chosen or when that candidate will be announced will come from the political party.

To the relief of Democrats in Maine (and elsewhere), Platner formally exited this afternoon, instead of waiting until Monday.

Turns out, like a lot of populists, it was as much about him as it was the movement he tried to represent. Unless his team were mere babes in the woods, they had to know this kind of scrutiny was coming. It's as old as politics itself no matter how whiny he gets about "outside forces" coming after him. That's simply how politics works and you'd best be ready for it. Can't stand the heat? Get out of the kitchen. Better yet, if you've got baggage that just isn't defensible and can't be spun, don't get in the damn kitchen in the first place.

What a waste that solid vetting could have caught before Maine Dems got into this damn mess. But then there's Swalwell. Of anyone who should have known, if it can be found out and made public it will be found out and made public, it's Eric Swalwell. The more high profile the race, the greater the probability. At least Platner's a neophyte vs. a multi-term congress critter who should have known better.
