WASHINGTON The landmark housing bill that Congress approved last week will become law with or without President Donald Trump's signature, House Speaker Mike Johnson says.
The president will either allow the bipartisan bill that passed the House and Senate with overwhelming majorities to go into effect or he will come around to signing it, Johnson told USA TODAY in an exclusive interview at the U.S. Capitol.
Johnson said he again pushed the president during a two-hour Oval Office meeting on Monday, June 29, to sign the legislation that aims to make housing more affordable. "He said he'll think about it, and we'll talk about it again this week," Johnson said.
Either way, the bill will become law, Johnson asserted. "He won't veto the bill. We already know that. He'll either allow it to just go into law, or he'll put his signature on it and take partial ownership, and I hope he does the latter."

(11,265 posts)No way he will miss an opportunity to take credit for something. And Id guess full credit, rather than Mikes suggested partial ownership

(24,615 posts)what I don't like is the 1.1 trillion Pentagon bill coupled with the horrible "save act" and gawd knows what else.
GQP are doing their best in crashing the USA economy and kill more voting rights. They have basically killed affordable healthcare for millions.
The GQP are some sick MF's.

(173,916 posts)and this is the proverbial, no-effort "bacon/win" for them. Killing it by refusing to confirm their vote for it if it did get vetoed, would piss off all the idiotic indies who voted for them.

(184,309 posts)The president is guided by his obsessions. Helping Americans deal with an affordability crisis just doesnt capture and keep his attention.
Trump is guided by his obsessions and personal grievances, and he just canât bring himself to give a damn about the housing crisis.

But just as notably, he also canât seem to hide his indifference. He doesnât care, and he wants you to know that he doesnât care.

Time will tell whether the president makes Johnson appear foolish, but in the meantime, as Trump weighs his options, he continues to make clear that he just doesnt much care about the proposal sitting on his desk.
Q: Will you sign that housing bill?

TRUMP: It hasn't been sent to me yet. It's coming I understand, and then I'll make the determination. Big deal. It's a yawn.
....As part of the same exchange, the Republican added that the legislation is so unimportant when compared with the anti-voting measure hes desperate to get through Congress.....
The president has raised some vague concerns about the substance of the package, but his Monday comments hinted at a different kind of problem: Trump simply finds this boring......
The president is guided by his obsessions and personal grievances election conspiracy theories, assorted renovation projects, etc. and helping Americans deal with an affordability crisis just doesnt capture and keep his attention.
Whats amazing about this isnt just his indifference, which is striking enough, but also his willingness to tell people just how little he cares. This is the same president whos also said, I dont think about Americans financial situation, I love the inflation and I dont want to drive housing prices down.
Many Americans voted for Trump in 2024, believing his rhetoric about lowering costs and addressing the cost of living. Two years later, his scam has been made plain.
