Former judges implore current judge to assert her 'inherent authority' and reject Trump's 'laughable' defenses

Dozens of former federal judges are imploring a current federal judge to assert her authority, maintain jurisdiction, and acutely investigate the mechanics of President Donald Trump's planned $1.776 billion "anti-weaponization fund."

"At issue here are the parties' extraordinary actions: an obviously collusive suit; an unprecedented, clearly unwarranted settlement premised on the supposed legitimacy of that suit; active steps to prevent the Court from scrutinizing the legitimacy of their invocation of the judicial process; and now, the Justice Department unilaterally walking away from the huge settlement," the motion reads.

In January, Trump's original lawsuit against the IRS was filed in the Southern District of Florida. By the middle of May, however, the case was closed – on the plaintiff's own request – with the 45th and 47th president opting instead for a publicly subsidized fund that would reward pro-Trump stalwarts and others similarly situated.

In her order closing the case, U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams, a Barack Obama appointee, expressed a number of doubts about the finality of the process but seemed inclined to let things go – at least for a while. Meanwhile, at least four other lawsuits and/or claims were filed aiming to pump the brakes on what critics call a "slush fund."
