Energy secretary says Trump administration is open to suspending gas tax amid soaring prices

Source: NBC News

Energy Secretary Chris Wright told NBC News’ “Meet the Press” on Sunday that the Trump administration is “open to all ideas” to lower the cost of gas, including suspending the federal gas tax. Gas prices have been soaring, hitting a national average of $4.52 per gallon on Sunday, according to data from motor club AAA — an increase of more than 50% since the start of the Iran war.

Asked by moderator Kristen Welker whether he would support suspending the federal gas tax, Wright said that “all measures that can be taken to lower the price at the pump and lower the prices for Americans, this administration is in support of.”

Asked to clarify whether President Donald Trump is open to suspending the federal gas tax, which stands at about 18 cents a gallon, Wright said, “We’re open to all ideas.” “Everything has trade-offs,” he added.

Democrats in Congress introduced a bill in March to temporarily suspend the federal gas tax until October.

Typical Republicans, their answer to everything is, cut taxes. They don’t mind going into debt at all.

It may be cheaper to tax and spend in the long run. But passing the cost off onto your children makes your wallet feel fatter now!

In Pennsylvania we use the gasoline sales tax to fund repairs on our roads, tunnels and bridges. Chump never had a say on how our tax money is collected and spent in Pennsylvania.

construction and upkeep of highways and bridges. If you think America's ground transportation infrastructure is decrepit already, you should not favor cutting this revenue stream and making the problem that much worse.

I understand the desire to lower prices, but I just paid $6.29 in California. Eighteen cents off that price isn't going to make much difference in my life, especially when the trade off will be more extensive car repairs due to poorly maintained roads.

Stop the damn war seems a more reliable way to eventually get lower fuel prices.

If they're open to any ideas to lower gas prices, none is better than ending the war with Iran.

Justice matters.

The Constitution says that only the House can initiate new taxes. Wouldn't the corollary be that only Congress can eliminate them?

Yeah, I know - the Speaker of the House is a craven, sniffling, sycophant, but when does the rest of the House come to their senses?
