Warship Launched for New 'Multinational' Strait of Hormuz Operation

A British warship is headed to the Middle East for a potential multinational mission to protect shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. HMS Dragon, a type 45 destroyer, will be in pre-position, ready to join an initiative led by NATO allies, France and the U.K., after hostilities cease between Iran and US-Israeli forces, the U.K. government has said.

Some 40 nations are involved in the multinational operation to escort shipping through the Strait, as and when shipping allows. It comes as the Strait of Hormuz remains restricted, and the fallout from the Iran war continues to threaten economic instability around the world.

Why It Matters

Thousands have been killed since the beginning of the war across the Middle East, and the war has brought significant economic consequences.

The Strait of Hormuz, which typically carries a fifth of the world’s oil and gas, has been effectively closed since the beginning of the war. A fragile ceasefire remains in effect. American forces hit two Iranian tankers in an alleged attempt to breach a U.S. blockade of the strait. President Donald Trump is continuing to put pressure on Iran, through the prevention of ships from travelling either to or from its ports.

As of early 2026, the Royal Navy operates a total of approximately 63 commissioned ships and submarines, complemented by 9–12 vessels in the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA). The core fleet consists of 2 Aircraft Carriers, 6 Type 45 Destroyers, 7 Frigates, 10 Submarines (4 ballistic, 6 attack), and a variety of patrol, survey, and mine-countermeasure vessels

With several of each type undergoing rest/refit and others tasked with local patrol jobs they have almost nothing they can send, a far cry from 1982 when just one Task Force sent to the Falklands during the 1982 war consisted of:

The Royal Navy task force for the 1982 Falklands War comprised 127 ships, including 43 RN combat vessels (2 aircraft carriers, 15 frigates, 6 destroyers, 2 LPDs, and 6 submarines) and 22 Royal Fleet Auxiliaries. Over 60 merchant ships (STUFT) were also requisitioned. Personnel included 32,160 active sailors
