NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) -- A gunman is dead after injuring two people at Old Dominion University Thursday morning, according to ODU officials.

A gunman opened fire in Constant Hall at approximately 10:50 a.m. ODU officials said two people were injured as a result and were taken to a local hospital. Their status is currently unknown.

ODU sophomore Logan Hayes was in Constant Hall taking a test when the active shooter situation started. He said the fire alarm went off and he ran out of the building.

As soon as he got outside, Logan told WAVY, "I heard about a multitude of gunshots go off and people just screaming."

Criminal convictions are not an immediate disqualifier.

In his case if he served 7 years prison I can only assume that was the result of a felony (or several) which would then result in a firearms prohibition.

A gunman opened fire in a building on the campus of Old Dominion University on Thursday, killing one person and injuring two others, in what the authorities said was being investigated as an act of terrorism. The gunman, who also died, had previously been convicted on terrorism-related charges, according to people familiar with the investigation.

The shooting took place shortly before 10:49 a.m., when a gunman opened fire in Constant Hall, a campus building with classrooms and lecture halls, the university said. The Old Dominion University police, Norfolk police and other emergency personnel responded.

The gunman has been identified as Mohammad Jalloh, who had been convicted years ago of attempting to provide material services to the Islamic State, according to people familiar with the investigation. The victims included members of R.O.T.C., officials said.

Kash Patel, the F.B.I. director, said in a post on X that the shooting was being investigated as an act of terrorism. Mr. Jalloh, a former member of the Army National Guard, was arrested by the F.B.I. in 2016 after an undercover investigation in which, the authorities said, he bought an assault rifle in hopes of conducting an attack. He pleaded guilty, was sent to prison, and released in 2024, the people familiar with the case said.

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Mohamed Jalloh, a man previously convicted of providing ISIL material support and recently released from prison, has been identified by the FBI as the shooter who killed one person and injured two others at Old Dominion University Thursday morning.

The gunman is also dead, having been “rendered no longer alive” by ROTC students containing the shooter and preventing further loss of life, according to Dominique Evans, special agent in charge of the FBI Norfolk field office. She outlined details about the shooting and the person it has identified as the shooter during a press conference Thursday afternoon.

In a press conference held around 2 p.m., ODU Police Chief Garrett Shelton confirmed one victim was dead and two were in stable condition. He added one victim self-transported to a hospital in Virginia Beach.

Shelton also revealed the gunman was found dead when officers arrived around 10:50 a.m. ... “There were students in that room that subdued him and rendered him no longer alive,” Evans said. “They basically were able to terminate the threat,” adding, “he was not shot.”
