EL PASO, Texas -- A man who was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Minneapolis has died after being transferred to a DHS facility in Texas.
Victor Manuel Diaz, a 36-year-old man from Nicaragua, was arrested by ICE agents on Jan 6 for an immigration violation, according to a release from ICE.
According to ICE, its "contract security" found Diaz unresponsive in his room and he was pronounced dead on Jan 14.
Diaz's death remains under investigation but ICE believes he died of a "presumed suicide."
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.

A 36-year-old man who was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Minneapolis died while in federal custody in Texas on Wednesday, according to the agency.
Security personnel found Victor Manuel Diaz unconscious and unresponsive in his room at Camp East Montana in El Paso, according to ICE.
El Paso Emergency Medical Services were notified at 3:35 p.m. local time and were at the site attempting life-saving measures 10 minutes later, the federal agency said. Diaz died at 4:09 p.m.
"He died of a presumed suicide," ICE said in a statement. "However, the official cause of his death remains under investigation."

(283 posts)Perhaps every detainee must be seen by a medical doctor, triaged if necessary, before being placed in a cell. It would be delicious irony for DHS to pay for healthcare for all (of their detainees.) Maybe some resentful ICE agents might be less incentivized to detain if the detainees get more and better healthcare than do their families.
