Trump faces uproar from MAGA base over possible Iran strike

Source: Reuters

June 18, 2025 9:09 PM EDT Updated 9 hours ago

WASHINGTON, June 18 (Reuters) - The prospect of a U.S. strike against Iran has exposed divisions in the coalition of supporters that brought President Donald Trump to power, with some of his base urging him not to get the country involved in a new Middle East war.

Some of Trump's most prominent Republican allies, including top lieutenant Steve Bannon, have found themselves in the unusual position of being at odds with a president who largely shares their isolationist tendencies. Bannon, one of many influential voices from Trump's "America First" coalition, on Wednesday urged caution about the U.S. military joining Israel in trying to destroy Iran's nuclear program in the absence of a diplomatic deal.

"We can't do this again," Bannon told reporters at an event sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor in Washington. "We'll tear the country apart. We can't have another Iraq." The anti-interventionist part of the Republican Party is watching with alarm as Trump has moved swiftly from seeking a peaceful diplomatic settlement with Iran to possibly having the United States support Israel's military campaign, including the use of a 30,000-pound "bunker buster" bomb.

The criticism shows the opposition Trump could face from his right-leaning "Make America Great Again" flank should he join the fight, a step that Iran has warned would have big consequences for Americans without specifying what that might be.

Rank and File MAGA gave up their power when they cast their votes for Trump in 2024.

The power Trump has to screw them and the US is immense. For example, Trump could pardon every prisoner in the Federal penitentiary system immediately. Is this a possibility? Well he pardoned every Jan 6 insurrectionist, despite most of his voters being opposed.

SC Chief Justice John Robert’s added to the Trump presidency even more power than the Constitution had granted the presidency. What has been Trump’s response. He grabbed that additional power pushed for more and attacked the entire judiciary, including the Supreme Court. ( Thus making John Robert’s Amember of the ever-growing “I did not think the Leopard would eat My Face club).

and probably didn't put all his eggs in that basket for obvious reasons. He used him for his own purposes as long as he could and will probably shift the strategy a bit.

I keep seeing headlines about the angry MAGAt base, and what are they gonna do? Not vote for him?

And I don't want to credit BANNON with being "right," but he said that no matter how much the MAGAts object, once Trump tells them to go along with it, they'll just go along with it.

The fundamental thing to consider here is that Trump does not "BELIEVE IN" ANYONE, but he convinced the MAGAts he believed in them, and they desperately needed to be told that (true or not), so...

...I don't see those leopards changing their spots any time soon. He'll tell them what to think, and then that's what they'll think.

Remnember, the right thing done for the wrong reasons is still the right thing.

Besides, we're getting so few victories these days we have to take them where we find them.

Well, since Bannon and the rest of the MAGA creeps have already done that, I presume he means Iran will drive a wedge between the MAGAs.

Israel got themselves into this. Let them figure out what the goals are and how to get out of it. If the US gets involved, it's hard to get uninvolved. Besides that, I think it's hypocritical for dovish Trump to get involved in this situation. It undermines his agenda and message.

I think Trump only gets involved if he thinks it's an easy victory. For Iran, it's important to make it messy to scare Trump away.
