DHS terminates temporary protected status program for Afghans

Source: Politico

05/12/2025 03:01 PM EDT

Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced on Monday that the U.S. will terminate the temporary protected status program for Afghanistan, a move that could lead to the deportation of over 9,000 Afghans residing in the country. Noem said in a statement that the conditions in Afghanistan have improved sufficiently to warrant the program’s termination.

Afghans’ temporary protected status will expire on May 20 and the elimination of the program will take effect on July 12. “This administration is returning TPS to its original temporary intent,” Noem said. “We’ve reviewed the conditions in Afghanistan with our interagency partners, and they do not meet the requirements for a TPS designation.”

Noem also claimed that the termination aligns with the Trump administration’s efforts to root out fraud in the immigration system. “The termination furthers the national interest as DHS records indicate that there are recipients who have been under investigation for fraud and threatening our public safety and national security,” Noem said.

The TPS program provides temporary legal status and work authorization to nationals from countries experiencing armed conflict, natural disasters, or other extraordinary conditions. Former President Joe Biden designated Afghanistan for TPS following the Taliban’s takeover and the U.S. withdrawal from the country in 2021, which led to the evacuation of tens of thousands of Afghans to the U.S., many under temporary “parole” status.

sending women (and men as well, though their rights aren't nearly as curtailed) back into a hellhole we created.

Then again, Texas and many other states are becoming indistinguishable from Afghanistan on many levels vis a vis their treatment of women and is only getting worse, so I guess I shouldn't throw stones, really (except I live in California and have never voted for a single Republican in the nearly 40 years I've voted in every single election since I became eligible).

I guess it was all just performative outrage per usual. Who would have guessed that at the time...everyone except the clueless national media.

Maybe they can go to that country for asylum or immigration? They have nothing to lose by trying.

This just will prove to people that if the USA military comes asking for your assistance run away as fast as you can.

They really don't give a shit, do they?

For most of these people being sent back is an automatic death sentence.

"Noem said in a statement that the conditions in Afghanistan have improved sufficiently to warrant the program’s termination." What an absolute crock of shit. I'd be willing to bet my own money that our sparkly white refugees from South Africa are a hell of a lot safer where they are that these Afghans will be when they are sent back.

Oh, our church sponsors two Afghan families and my wife works with their children to help improve their reading in English. Both of the husbands worked as guides and interpreters for our military. What a great thank you they are getting.

This really, really hacks me off.

These people risked their life and the lives of their families to help the American military, with the promise of safety in the U.S. for doing so. They were "human assets" and we just threw them away and laughed... how? by watching them deport to the country where'll they'll be executed when found, and welcoming a group of white people as refugees who have no reason for refugee status... who've never help us except to prop up the repugs voter roles (and give trump more money!)

No white citizens have been killed by the government. There is a law that says that they may force them to sell some of their property in the future.
This is forceful, in-your-face racism at its very worst.

This may be it. Our country can't be counted on to protect those civilians who volunteer, at great risk, to help our service personnel.

This project wasn't my war.... I'm way older than that. But it makes no difference. These people laid their lives and the lives of their family on the line to help American soldiers and our government. And we're seeing the government throwing them back into the lion's den for no reason except maybe to make room for more white racists repub voters who'll freely donate money to trump. It's sickening. Trump (nor GW, etc) doesn't know the reason we treat enemies decently. The flip side is our American soldiers in harms way. While he's stripping the ranks of the military of people who want to be there and fight for their country, he's making it a hell of a lot harder to recruit other younger people. They've stripped ethics, patriotism, and moral obligation from recruiting. Kids these days are a lot smarter than they were when I enlisted, IMO. Or, at least, they're a lot more cynical than I was back then.

Stab our allies in the back, and we WILL be stabbed in the back in the future. Count on it.
