Trump pardons roughly 1,500 criminal defendants charged in the Jan. 6 Capitol attack

The sweeping pardons would mark the beginning of the end of one of the largest investigations in FBI history.

WASHINGTON President Donald Trump said on Monday that he was issuing roughly 1,500 pardons and commuting the sentences of six of his supporters in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, when thousands of them stormed the building amid his false claims that the 2020 presidential election was rigged against him.
He made the remarks after returning to the White House Monday evening.
An attorney for Enrique Tarrio, the Proud Boys leader convicted of seditious conspiracy, told NBC News on Monday that his client was being processed for release from FCI Pollock, a medium security federal prison in Louisiana. Tarrio was serving 22 years in federal prison after being convicted of seditious conspiracy.
He is being processed out, attorney Nayib Hassan said. We do not know what type of clemency he is receiving."
The pardons would fulfill one of Trump's central campaign promises. Immediately after the Jan. 6 attack, Trump sought to distance himself from the attack, saying that those who broke the law should be held accountable. ..................

(2,458 posts)She said there have been crowds of Proud Boys roaming around all day.
After midnight on Jan 6, she heard voices in the alley behind her townhouse. Called the guy next door, they investigated, found two lost J6ers wandering around, both with pistols.
The guy next door "sympathized" with them, invited them into his place for coffee, bathroom break, etc. Told my daughter to call the DC cops and tell them to respond silently -- no lights, no siren -- while he kept the assholes busy in his place. Within 10 minutes, 9 cops were there -- talk about some surprised assholes when all 9 of them walked in, stuffed and cuffed and hauled them off. Daughter and guy next door high-fived all the cops.
Maybe she'll get that lucky again tonight.

(3,513 posts)As another poster notes, private parties can't entrap.
But I'd be interested in having you point out to me how this story involves the citizens tempting the criminals into committing a crime. That's the essence of entrapment, after all.

We knew he was going to do this but it sucks hard enough to bend light.

Can Democracy hold back Oligarchy? Or will Oligarchy roll over Democracy? I think they have one up on Democracy right now, by the freeing of 1,500 hardened criminals who might have killed some people and tried to tear the Capital down. I know Trump did allot more damage yesterday, as he was floated from spot to spot signing Exec Orders, but freeing his 1,500 Coup fighters was the most violent. I just wonder if they will be the ones armed & suited up in riot gear when the protests start?
When something as tragic as this happens, we have to figure out what went wrong, Ocelot.

(171 posts)Has the power to pardon been used as intended in more than a handful of cases? Allowing anyone to overrule a peer justice system is dangerous. Not allowing them too, is, dangerous.
The legal system is pretty poor. Whether its these guys or any number of other people incarcerated, I don't personally know anyone who will say with confidence that our current system works.
And what does works even mean?
Are we restoring the victim?
Retraining the offender?
Exacting crude punishment just because?
My own preference is a mix of the first two, with a healthy serving of "public interest" taken into consideration.
The flurry of prosecutions looked to many how the Hunter Biden persecution was.. they started with a person and found the crimes to confirm their belief they must be guilty of something if only they looked hard enough. That's also wrong.

(279 posts)Section 3 Disqualification from Holding Office
No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.
Did he not just give aid or comfort to convicted insurrectionists?
I mean maybe he was not found guilty of being an insurrectionists, but they were and with his action did he not just at the very least provide aid or comfort, is that not a direct violation of the 14th Sec 3?
What am I thinking - the constitution actually being followed - silly silly me
