'Mexican America': Mexico rebukes Trump, suggests renaming North America

Source: TRT World

Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum has suggested North America including the United States could be renamed "Mexican America" - a historic name used on an early map of the region in response to US President-elect Donald Trump's pledge to rename the Gulf of Mexico the "Gulf of America."

"Mexican America, that sounds nice," Sheinbaum joked, pointing at the map from 1607 showing an early portrayal of North America.

The president, who has jousted with Trump in recent weeks, used her daily press conference to give a history lesson, flanked by old maps and former culture minister Jose Alfonso Suarez del Real.

She's terrific, like her predecessor. I hope this causes an intestinal obstruction inside Trumpf.

1. Technically, her map is Spain. LOL (Mexico was their territory in 1607)

Spain sold a bunch of land to France, which we then purchased under the Louisiana purchase.
Mexico became a country in 1821.

This is how "New Spain" looked in 1819

I still think they should "rename" the region as Mexico just to bug Trump.

2. It would not be inaccurate to refer to "The Gulf of Tejas."

Doing so would give the State of Texas some props regarding the name of the Gulf.

3. The old map is funny. No Great Lakes, no Mississippi River, the arctic circle is too far south.

Add to the fact, that the area known as Mexico was part of Spain at the time.

I get a kick out of really old maps before they knew how it really looked.

I did not know the Midwest was a Spanish protectorate.

Perhaps this 1607 map is what the museum had available for her or there were other maps at her press conference, but TRT went with this photo.

Importantly, international leaders are standing up to-- and ridiculing-- the bully.
