Trump says he will change the name of the Gulf of Mexico
Source: AP
President-elect Donald Trump said Tuesday that he would move to try to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, a name he said has a beautiful ring to it.
Its his latest suggestion to redraw the map of the Western Hemisphere. Trump has repeatedly referred to Canada as the 51st State, demanded that Denmark consider ceding Greenland, and called for Panama to return the Panama Canal.

(11,640 posts)Granted, it was named "Gulf of Mexico" by the Spanish conquistadors. According to Wikipedia, the first non-Native person to explore it was Amerigo Vespucci.
However, I don't think that honoring Vespucci is what the Orange Horror has in mind.

Mexico 'South land of the Barbarian Enemies.'
Maps are reprinted, all state names are abolished, instead . . . Central Trumpmenistan, Western Trumpmenistan, and Eastern, Northern and Southern Trumpmenistan.
Maps will have warnings on the oceans, 'Dragons live here, do not go!'

Were going to be announcing at a future date, pretty soon, were going to change because we do most of the work there, and its ours were going be changing sort of the opposite of Biden, where hes closing everything up, essentially getting rid of $50 to $60 trillion worth of assets well be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring. That covers a lot of territory. The Gulf of America: What a beautiful name. And its appropriate. Its appropriate.
As a video clip from the event makes clear, the incoming American president is not kidding.

.....But stepping back, its worth taking stock of the Republicans increasingly bizarre foreign policy agenda as he prepares to return to the White House. Since Election Day, Trump has:
leaned into the idea of adding Greenland to the United States;
talked with increasing enthusiasm about adding Canada to the U.S. through some kind of unexplained merger;
raised the prospect of the U.S. seizing control of the Panama Canal;
and vowed to impose trade tariffs on each of the U.S. three largest trade partners.
Whats more, asked at his Mar-a-Lago event whether he can assure the world that he wont use military or economic coercion toward Greenland and Panama, the incoming president declined.
No, I cant assure you on either of those two, but I can say this, we need them for economic security, Trump replied.

(478 posts)When I heard this, I asked myself what the actual mechanism for changing the name of an international body of water is.
From what little I can find it seems like it would have to go through the UN Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN) to be internationally recognized.
Given Trumps proven views on international organizations and cooperation therewith I dont see him being able to push this through. Of course, he might be able to get a law passed saying all publications in the US are required to use the name, which would suck and make us more of a laughingstock, but that would have little impact on the rest of the world.
I just hope he forgets the idea by tomorrow morning and we never here about it again, except perhaps in late night talk show monologs.
At this point hope may be all we have left.

(5,428 posts)Decisions to rename a shared inland sea or major lake would likely involve diplomatic negotiations and consensus-building among the countries that border it. Any attempt by one country to unilaterally rename a shared body of water without the agreement of other neighboring countries would likely face challenges and could potentially lead to diplomatic tensions.
While countries can have influence over the naming of bodies of water within their own territorial waters, renaming internationally recognized bodies of water, such as the Gulf of Mexico, would likely require widespread international consensus and recognition.
It is unlikely that a US President and a compliant Congress could unilateraly rename the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America" without facing significant challenges in terms of international acceptance and recognition. Similarly, any nation seeking to rename any major body of water would need to navigate complex diplomatic processes and seek approval from the International community.
Obviously, the naming of international waters and bodies od water is a complex and multilateral process. It would involve considerations of history, geography, geopolitics, and international norms (LOL) rather than being a decision that can be arbitrarily made by a single country or leader.
