Israeli soccer fans attacked in Amsterdam, Israeli authorities say
Source: CNN
Israeli soccer fans were attacked in a serious incident of violence in Amsterdam overnight into Friday, Israeli authorities said, with the government saying it was sending planes to evacuate affected citizens.
Hundreds of fans of Israels Maccabi Tel Aviv soccer team were ambushed and attacked in Amsterdam on Thursday night as they left the stadium following a Europa League game against Dutch side Ajax, the Israeli embassy to the United States said on social media platform X.
Social media video shared by the embassy showed what it said was violence against Maccabi fans.
CNN has not yet been able to verify those videos.

Assailants shouting free Palestine brutally attack Israeli soccer fans in Amsterdam
The US envoy to counter antisemitism issues a statement denouncing the attacks on Israelis in Amsterdam, in the first comment on the violence from the Biden administration.
Horrified by the attacks tonight in Amsterdam, which are terribly reminiscent of a classic pogrom, says Ambassador Deborah Lipstadt. I am also deeply disturbed by how long the reported attacks lasted and call on the government to conduct a thorough investigation into security force intervention and on how these despicable attacks transpired.
In terrible historical irony, this is happening two days before the grim anniversary of Reichspogromnacht in 1938, when Nazi-sanctioned and led pogroms against Jews erupted across the German Reich, she adds, referring to Kristallnacht.

(28,522 posts)My EPL team is Tottenham Hotspur, which have strong Jewish ties due to the part of North London, where they are from. Their fans have experienced some anti-Semitism over the years, but not at this level.
However, they are playing in Europe right now (they were in Turkiye today) and now I wouldn't be surprised this ugliness spread to the team and its fans.

Violent attacks against Maccabi Tel Aviv fans continue to take place in Amsterdam following a soccer match between Maccabi and Ajax on Thursday evening.
Local authorities and Israel's Foreign Ministry have reported that ten Israelis have been injured so far in the pogrom, with consul members currently searching hospitals. Three people have been reported missing.
Among those missing is 33 year old Israeli-Bulgarian Guy Avidor, who traveled from London for the game. The last contact his family had with him was a post on social media before the match, and he has since been missing for 10 hours, according to Walla.

(9,323 posts)It was Islamist extremists. The videos are out there, even first-person videos from the terrorists, a la Oct 7.
This event should not be whitewashed.

(9,323 posts). . . and this was a planned event. There were signs in Amsterdam that said something to the effect of "send the Jews to the gas chambers." The terrorists were waiting at the stadium gates with knives and baseball bats.
So, where was law enforcement is a critical question.
