Cheney: 'Guardrails of democracy' must keep Trump in check

Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) said Wednesday that citizens, courts, media and elected officials would now serve as the guardrails of democracy after former President Trump resoundingly won a second term.
Our nations democratic system functioned last night and we have a new President-elect, Cheney, a prominent critic of the former president, wrote on the social platform X. All Americans are bound, whether we like the outcome or not, to accept the results of our elections.
We now have a special responsibility, as citizens of the greatest nation on earth, to do everything we can to support and defend our Constitution, preserve the rule of law, and ensure that our institutions hold over these coming four years, she continued.
Citizens across this country, our courts, members of the press and those serving in our federal, state and local governments must now be the guardrails of democracy.

(3,221 posts)Many judges have been appointed by Trump, with more to come now that he's POTUS and Repubs own the Senate.
And, the press gave up their "guardrail" role years ago.
Make no mistake - America is over. Repubs will use their power to re-engineer the system to give them permanent power. Think I'm being hyperbolic? Just read Project 2025.
The American Republic lasted about 240 years. I suppose that's not bad. I just wish it would have endured longer. Now, it evolves into a sinister 21st century version of Stalinist Russia: racist, homophobic, anti-abortion/misogynist and authoritarian-embracing. Also, a gutting of government and public services with a huge giveaway to big business - who will do their bidding with no oversite from the government/people.

The courts are taking the "See/hear/speak no evil" position
The press started genuflecting before the election
Only loyalists are going to be allowed in the Federal government
So I guess it is up to state and local governments. Unfortunately, over half of those want him to "fix" the fictitious problems in the country (or at least fix the "problem" of certain people in the country)

(388 posts)Should she just spout words of despair, like most of us are doing -- including me! (Deep depression today.)
What would you say in front of a microphone?
There's nothing incorrect about her words.
"We now have a special responsibility, as citizens of the greatest nation on earth, to do everything we can to support and defend our Constitution, preserve the rule of law, and ensure that our institutions hold over these coming four years, she continued."
Of course, we can just damn her for being a conservative Republican for whom things did not work out well. Or we can recognize we're all in a hole together, and Cheney is still our ally. She may be the first to bear the brunt of Trump's wrath. She ain't going down without a fight.

She knew what the stakes were. They haven't changed.
It was a dire forecast from her last week, and now it's reality. There is no "fight." Fuck Off Liz.
Intractable

>> There is no "fight."
I guess we can't count on you.
I suspect you will feel differently given some time.

(10,296 posts)I'm done with this country. I only wish I had the means and opportunity to leave.
I plan to focus my energies on my own survival. Getting into a "fight" with the other side, will only put my existence at risk. I'm not willing to die for a cause that's now hopeless.
We spent the last 4 years hearing about how important this was, and how much was at risk. They can't suddenly say, "but wait, we were just exaggerating." They weren't. They just don't feel like telling us the reality.
I have genuine fear for the World, this Country, and myself. I feel like fighting could get me killed, and I'm not going to die on that hill.
No offense intended. I commend your ability to block out the reality. Wish I could too.

(388 posts)This is me facing reality and realizing that my life is not over, and that it is up to me to make my life good.
You are the one blocking reality by putting your head in the sand.
The trauma is fresh. It burns me. It depresses me. But life is not over.
>> I plan to focus my energies on my own survival.
As you should. As the flight attendants say, you must put the mask on your own face before trying to save others.
In a few weeks, I think you will feel differently about being in the fight.
SoCalDavidS
(10,296 posts)In a few weeks, I'm going to be even more fearful than I am today. Like I said, I feel like many of us already have a target on our heads. All the Revenge talk was not hyperbole. I'm not willing to risk my life for a cause that has been lost. There comes a time to stop digging.
We all have choices to make, and if you feel comfort in making yours, then god speed.

(30,058 posts)The republicans failed us because they would not convict him after the insurrection and remove him from office.
The DOJ failed us because they foot dragged to get a conviction and send him to prison.
The Courts failed up over and over and in so many insane decisions it isn't worth listing them.
The Media failed us because they loved a horse race and they sanewashed him and picked at Kamala every chance they could.
The Voters failed us because they have been brain hacked by Russia and the right wing propaganda machine.
So what are the guardrails now? What institution or group of powerful people are going to oppose him?
Our last hope was the House, and that is now dwindling fast. The House has no rules that will even delay or defeat anything Trump does... so long at the Majority votes along party lines.
So who are the guardrails now? Are we supposed to get "rambo'd up" with a bunch of guns and tactical gear and play act in the forest like we are going to start a revolution? Unlike the other side, we are actually smarter than that. Well even I might do it, but I know it is doomed to failure against an actual trained army with the best weapons that money can buy.
