In a Sunday morning interview on CNN's State of the Union, Ohio Senator JD Vance, Donald Trump's vice-presidential pick, was confronted about putting his constituents "at risk" due to his claims about Haitian immigrants eating pets. Amid the 2024 presidential election where immigration is a hot topic issue, city officials in Springfield, Ohio, have consistently debunked these rumors, but the claims gained even more prominence when Trump, the GOP presidential nominee, repeated them during the televised presidential debate on Tuesday night against Vice President Kamala Harris.
"In Springfield, they're eating the dogs," Trump said in Philadelphia during the debate. "The people that came in, they're eating the cats. They're eating the pets of the people that live there. And this is what's happening in our country. And it's a shame."
Far from just an online storm, it is affecting real life too. Springfield's city hall had to be evacuated on Thursday morning after a bomb threat, which officials said included "hateful language toward immigrants and Haitians in our community," was sent to it, along with the Clark County courthouse and two elementary schools. In addition, there was an emailed threat regarding a potential shooting on campus at Wittenberg University, a private liberal arts college in the city, leading to school evacuations and the canceling of planned events.
In a contentious, 17-minute interview on the topic, CNN host Dana Bash pressed Vance on Sunday about those claims, along with Trump's mention about the conspiracy theory on the debate stage.

(18,770 posts)Jebus, dude! You just admitted to lying and all the damage that comes from it. Secondly, if Amurkins are actually suffering, as you say, wouldn't there be tons of actual, real, factual stories to tell? Goddamn and sonny Jesus you're stupid.

(53,144 posts)Make no mistake, the GOP spreading these lies was all about trying to stir Ohio voters (using the GOP's go-to issue, immigration) to vote out Sherrod Brown so Republicans can take over the Senate. That is why Republicans are picking on these LEGAL Haitian immigrants in this small town in Ohio. They want to be able to block Democratic appointments to the federal bench. They want to block majority rule. This was as cynical as it gets.
As Heather Cox Richardson summarized it:
Controlling the country through the courts was the plan behind stacking the courts with Republican nominees and weaponizing the filibuster to stop Democrats from passing legislation. In March 2024, in Slate, legal analyst Mark Joseph Stern noted that McConnell realized you dont need to win elections to enact Republican policy. You dont need to change hearts and minds. You dont need to push ballot initiatives or win over the views of the people. All you have to do is stack the courts. You only need 51 votes in the Senate to stack the courts with far-right partisan activists
[a]nd they will enact Republican policies under the guise of judicial review, policies that could never pass through the democratic process. And those policies will be bulletproof, because they will be called law.
It's worked for Republicans in the past. But this time, it looks like it's blowing up in their faces. I hope.

(18,770 posts)has a long, documented pattern of saying incredibly stupid things, such as this latest....."I admit I'm just making this shit up." Might as well send a copy of that tape to the DSCC, gift wrapped no less. He's not holding up his part of the grand scheme. Not uncommon for someone who lucked into his current digs instead of getting there through neural horsepower.
Which brings me to the point you made at the end. I agree. It ain't gonna work. This whole demonizing Haitians and having it soundly debunked thing is clumsy at best. Smells like desperation to me. Trying desperately to energize a cult base who just aren't that enthused anymore. Taking out Sherrod Brown is a tough lift at any time. He's seen many a tough race. Much more so with the Harris effect.
