RFK Jr. says he is being investigated for collecting whale specimen

GLENDALE, Ariz. Former independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said Saturday he is being investigated for collecting a whale specimen. "I received a letter from the National Marine Fisheries Institute saying that they were investigating me for collecting a whale specimen 20 years ago," Kennedy said during a campaign event for former President Donald Trump in Glendale, Arizona, noting that he received the letter "this week."
Kennedy said that he responded in a letter, baselessly linking the National Marine Fisheries Service with whale deaths and calling for the agency to investigate. "This is all about the weaponization of our government against political opponents," he said. Kennedy did not go into details about the whale incident, but his daughter had previously described a situation involving a whale that took place 30 years ago.
His daughter Kathleen "Kick" Kennedy, 36, described in a 2012 article for Town & Country magazine how, when she was 6, her father used a chainsaw to cut the head off a dead whale that had washed ashore and bungee-corded it to the family's car during their drive home.
"Every time we accelerated on the highway, whale juice would pour into the windows of the car, and it was the rankest thing on the planet," she told the magazine at the time. "We all had plastic bags over our heads with mouth holes cut out, and people on the highway were giving us the finger, but that was just normal day-to-day stuff for us."

(15,600 posts)...that there are consequences for illegal activity.
Is the doj intentionally sending them that message by ignoring their crimes?

(1,753 posts)He cannot be charged for a 20-year-old environmental crime.
He just wants to make an accusation that he's being persecuted.
Show us the letter, asshole. Or at least direct us to your attorney.

(11,657 posts)Demand that he produce the letter.
Vance just admitted on national TV that he tells lies to further his agenda.
Since RFK Jr. has endorsed that ticket, I have to assume he's okay with lies as well.

(30,953 posts)Is there no statute of limitations for this kind of crime?
On the plus side, there are surely people who heard about this and thought it might be fun to also cut the head off a whale, and it's good to let them know it's illegal.

(28 posts)i suspect there Octare many of we americans who don't find this story "creepy" - albeit kinda looney. speaking from personal experience: i'm a hardcore natureboy. i grew up in a remote place, and the infinite beauty of our natural world has always amazed me, and always will. my home was described by a city-bred friend as "a mausoleum for nature". i have shells, skulls, fossils, fur ( i've never intentionally killed an animal) displayed everywhere. because they're beautiful. it's not in the least a "jeffery dahmer" thing. heck, i think most animals are better "people" than most people are!
but bobby does seem like a weirdo dumbass. i once found a huge seaturtle shell on an uninhabited island. i wanted so badly to take it home. but i didn't, because i know it's illegal to even possess.
and it _has to be_, because slimeballs have poached some species into near extinction, just like whales. if i possessed that shell, the law assumes i killed the animal.
and it has to be that way. so, even tho a (small) skull would be an amazing objet d'arte. i wouldn't do it. because it's illegal. for noble reasons.
so imho, bobby is at the least a wealthy scofflaw, and god knows we don't need more of them. he may also be a huge dumbass. we have enough of them, too.

(34,506 posts)His daughter is 36, the whale carcass mutilation was when she was 6. The article in T&C came out 12 years ago, she would have been 24.
If it's illegal, then it's illegal. They can investigate even if the statute of limitations has passed.
