Home Depot to pay $2 million settlement for overcharging customers

Source: CNN Business

New York CNN — Home Depot will pay nearly $2 million to settle a civil enforcement claim from California district attorneys that the home improvement company was engaging in false advertising and unfair competition.

The complaint filed in San Diego Superior Court said that when people at Home Depot brought an item to checkout, they would be charged more money than was written on the shelf tag or on the item itself. Such violations are called “scanner violations,” the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office said in a press release Thursday.

While the company admitted no wrongdoing, it must pay $1.7 million in civil penalties, as well as $277,251 to cover investigation costs as well as to “support future enforcement of consumer protection laws.”

The judgment ruled that Home Depot must implement a price accuracy program. “False advertising and unfair competition are serious offenses that undermine consumer trust and distort the marketplace,” Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said in a statement.

$1.7 million doesn't seem like a very big penalty for a giant corporation. Like a rich guy getting a $50 speeding ticket.

Nov 28 (Reuters) - Republican mega-donor Bernie Marcus said on Tuesday he would likely still give money to Donald Trump's 2024 presidential bid if the former president was convicted of a crime - but the billionaire does not plan to be one of his biggest financial backers.

Marcus, a co-founder of home improvement retailer the Home Depot (HD.N), opens new tab, announced earlier this month that he was supporting Trump, the runaway frontrunner for the 2024 Republican nomination contest that kicks off on Jan. 15 in Iowa.

Asked in an interview with Reuters whether he would still support Trump if he were convicted, Marcus replied, "I think so. Because I think it's all trumped up."

He's not running HD so is there any proof on new HD leadership going all in for Trump?

7. He's no longer involved in running the company, and neither is Arthur Blank, who is a big Democrat.

Most THD execs these days contribute to the Home Depot PAC, not so much to individual candidates. There was a flurry of contributions to Sinema a while back, no idea why.

Clued in my grandson, who almost fell victim to it. Seems if these corporations can't get their money one way, they'll find 10 other ways to do it -- especially if they're the only game in town, literally. We're small enough they ran out K-Mart, long before they went bankrupt. Target isn't anywhere close, so Walmart is the only game in town, and they're going down hill fast. Not only the pricing thing, but when you go there, shelves aren't stock and just because you found something you wanted one week, doesn't guarantee you'll ever see it there again.

I swear, we're living in 1950's Russia the way the shelves look around here!

I recall HD has had a history of trumpy corporate personnel. While they seem to have a better selection and are better stocked than my closest Lowe's, I choose the latter more often since their CEO Marvin Ellison is more community-minded.

THIS is the shit we need to remove from our justice system. No more 'not admitting guilt'. You get found guilty, you are guilty. If you, the plaintiff, 'settle', you are still admitting that you are guilty.

This spinning the facts is ridiculous and counterproductive to real justice.
