Gun violence was the leading killer of children and teens across the US for the third year in a row, according to a new Johns Hopkins University analysis.
Guns killed 2,526 children between the ages of 1 and 17, an average of seven youths slain a day, according to an analysis of 2022 data released by the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions.
The problem is even more accurate for children of color. More than half of black teens aged 15 to 17 were killed by a gun in 2022, and Black children and teens overall had a gun homicide rate 18 times that of their white peers.
Black, Hispanic, and Latino youth also had rates of gun suicide multiple times higher than white children. Overall, between 2013 and 2022, the youth gun rate doubled.

(3,575 posts)I empathize with this crazy gun violence and the need to ban semi and fully automatic weapons but more than half of black teens did not die by gun violence in 2022. What!!??

(141,334 posts)for that year (2022), half of those who were older black teens (15 - 17) who DIED - the cause of death was due to guns.
Meaning the major cause of death was not due to disease (or the pandemic) or accidents (vehicle, work-related, home-related) or recreational/weather-related (drowning, lightning, etc) or drug overdoses, or non-firearm related homicides, etc.
The USA Today article had this here - https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2024/09/13/guns-children-teenagers-united-states-report/75198121007/
The report also highlighted the disproportionate consequences of gun violence on children and teens of color:
In 2022, Black young people ages 1 to 17 had a gun homicide rate 18 times higher compared with white children and teens. And the rate for Hispanic/Latino children and teens was more than three times higher than for white young people. Gun suicide rates have increased over the past decade, tripling among Black youth ages 10 to 17 and more than doubling for Hispanic/Latino youth ages 10 to 17. Fifty-five percent of deaths among older Black teens ages 15 to 17 in 2022 were caused by guns. Across all age groups, American Indian/Alaskan Native people were five times more likely to die by gun homicide compared with white people in the same age group.

(34,946 posts)I heard a murder down the hill from my house last week - 5 shots fired into a young father's chest at 3:30 in the morning - and I fell back asleep.
It's an armed madhouse.
