Boeing Co. and its largest union said they hammered out a deal to potentially avoid a strike that would cripple its airplane manufacturing. The IAM 751 union and the company said the offer includes a wage increase of 25% over four years and a commitment to build Boeings next plane in the Seattle area.
The breakthrough came following a marathon bargaining session with a strike vote looming after the current contract expires at midnight Sept. 12. It marks a significant victory for new Boeing Chief Executive Officer Kelly Ortberg, whos signaled he wants to reset long-contentious labor relations at the planemaker.
But its too soon to know if Boeings factory workers will support the measure or buck their leadership. Anti-management sentiment is running high, particularly among workers who were pressured into forgoing pensions a decade ago.
The contract offer provides the largest-ever general wage increase, lower medical cost share to make health care more affordable, greater company contributions toward your retirement, and improvements for a better work-life balance, Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Stephanie Pope said in a video message to employees.

(26 posts)i moved to charleston sc when i was young, from a blue state. ugh. nasty place, for many reasons. all the conde nast bs to sell it investors - piss off.
but one of my strongest and most enduring impressions of the place is how strongly, virulently, violently anti- worker it is, and has always been. it was founded by the seven "lords proprieters", for heaven's sake ( look it up).
so it was clearly evident to me when boeing started talking about moving there from washington ( i lived there at the time) tht the ONLY motivation was drooling over that incredibly worker-hostile environment. i.e. EXECUTIVE GREED.
well f##k em. if the company goes fully bankrupt as a result of that evil choice, it will be less than they deserve. look what has, predictably, happened to their quality as a direct result.
deep empathy for th quality- minded WA workforce, but as for the execs and investors - FOAD.

(34,499 posts)There's no one who works at Boeing that doesn't know about the whistleblowers.
The Boeing machinist's union doesn't have any ability to stop someone from killing themselves.
