Update 3/3/2020: Image hotlinking has been partially restored -- however, please note that due to the nature of the fixes, some images will still not display if certain special characters are included in the image URL.While we continue to work on this issue, here is a temporary workaround: if you attempt to post an image and it does not show up when you preview your post, try uploading the image to a different image hosting service (such as imgur.com) which will "normalize" the characters in the URL.
We are continuing to work on fixes for this issue. Thanks for your patience.

Original post:
Unfortunately we are still having some issues with the fixes that were made earlier today to head off a problem with image hotlinking. (See this thread.) As such, we have temporarily disabled image hotlinking again. DU has not been hacked, and no data has been lost. We are doing this as a precaution in order to prevent future problems that may occur if the software is not patched now.
What does this mean?
Normally, to post an image at DU you simply post the URL of the image and it will be displayed in your post -- this is called "hotlinking." As of right now, this functionality has been turned off, so images will not automatically show up in your posts -- they will just appear as a plain link to the image. If people want to see the image you posted, they will have to click through and visit the source page.
If you are hotlinking images in your signature line, you will notice that those images also do not appear.
We are very sorry for the inconvenience -- we know that posting images is a big part of posting on DU -- but we need to make sure this issue is dealt with in a timely fashion. Bear in mind that although your images are currently displaying as links, when we turn hotlinking back on they should simply reappear as images again.
When will image hotlinking be back?
As of this moment we do not know how long this fix might take, but Elad is working on it right now, and as soon as we have an update we will let you know immediately.
Again, we apologize for the inconvenience.

(87,173 posts)A tad of an inconvenience is nothing compared to the safety and well being of this site.
Thanks guys.

I'm assuming there was nothing anyone found objectionable in my sig photos... LOL...

(42,666 posts)Monster Hunter images have been replaced with links, so I erased the links. I guess I will have to wait to see if we get these back anytime soon... sigh.

(22,515 posts)I recommend just leaving them (I'm going to add this info to the announcement).

(10,253 posts)I remember that years ago we were allowed to hotlink. And then all of a sudden we weren't allowed to hot link anymore. And I had to get a Photobucket account.
So imagine my surprise when I'm reading that DU has been allowing hotlinking for heaven only knows how long, and I didn't even know it!

(20,987 posts)...such as Instagram or Pinterest, to post YOUR photos here. You cannot directly upload your own photos to a DU post, as you can on many social media services.
Before the ubiquity of social media services, an account with photobucket or some similar photo fileshare utility was necessary if you (for instance) made a meme and wanted to share it on DU.
Now you can tweet it out or add it to your Facebook page, Instagram account, etc., copy the image location from there, and hotlink it here in a DU post.
Or you could.
And hopefully will again.
I do love image sharing here on DU, especially SCE's Sunday Special. But I remember 2016, and keeping the site safe is WAY more important.
affirmatively,

(10,253 posts)I do remember that I had to use Photobucket for anything that came from my computer. But at one time we could hotlink when we found something online, and then we weren't allowed to do it anymore. Something about using up too much bandwidth. I think.
I don't have any social media accounts at all. This is the only place I post online.
And absolutely, the safety of DU is first and foremost! I don't think any of us could survive without this place.

(895 posts)that things were working well before this latest attempt at "fixing" things was begun.
Now, unless I log in I cannot see replies to a thread. Why is this necessary? If somebody who isn't a member desires to follow just 1 thread on occasion they would miss any change or addition that would alter the OP that has been posted in a reply.

(22,515 posts)First Ive heard of this. I just checked and I can see replies while logged out...
What are you seeing? Just the OP and then the end of the page?
