Voters, poll workers detail spring election problems

From long waits due to ballot shortages to broken seals on voting machines, frustrated voters and poll workers on Saturday detailed the problems they witnessed in the snarled spring election Saturday.

The meeting, at Loussac library, was the first of two interview sessions held by the city Election Commission to hear voter complaints. City leaders have pledged to launch an investigation of the election, during which about one in three precincts temporarily ran short on ballots.

Certification of the April 3 election was postponed so the election commission to issue recommendations on what an investigator should look at. The ballot included a failed initiative aiming to gain legal protections for gay and transgender residents and a mayoral showdown that ended in reelection of incumbent Dan Sullivan .

The elections officials held one-one-interviews for several hours Saturday, with a second session planned for 4 p.m. Monday in room 830 at City Hall, the city clerk says.
