Clerk calls for independent review of Anchorage election

Anchorage Municipal Clerk Barbara Gruenstein, who oversees city elections, is calling on Assembly members to launch an outside investigation into the troubled April 3 election.

Gruenstein says she sent the request in a letter to Assembly members today in hopes an external investigation would "add clarity to the issues" of ballot shortages and other Election Day mishaps.

Assembly members grilled the clerk and a deputy clerk about the shortages today at a work session at Loussac Library.

Didn't Gruenstein talk to the deputy clerk about the possibility of Proposition 5, a controversial gay rights measure, jolting voter turnout, asked Assemblyman Bill Starr.

Interested to see how this goes. The Assembly vote against a special investigator was a crock.
