An 18-month-old Blount County boy is in a Birmingham hospital and not expected to survive after authorities say he was gravely injured by his mothers boyfriend when the toddler accidentally pulled the mans chest hair.
The boys mother, 24-year-old Samantha McCormack, and her boyfriend, 28-year-old Robert Elmore Jr., are being held without bond in the Blount County Jail, jail records show. McCormack is charged with first-degree reckless assault and Elmore is charged with attempted murder. They are held without bond.
Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey confirmed the arrests and said charges are expected to be upgraded upon the death of the child.
The ordeal began Friday evening at Locust Fork Hardware, where McCormack stopped to get gas with her unresponsive son in the vehicle. It was there that 911 was called and Blount County sheriffs deputies and medic responded to the store, according to charging documents.
Lawmen at the scene noticed the boy had knots and bruising on his forehead and bloodshot eyes. Medics were working on the boy, who was unresponsive and turning blue. They requested he be airlifted to Childrens of Alabama in Birmingham.
The charging documents reflect a number of conflicting stories told by McCormack and Elmore as to how the boy was critically injured. Sheriffs investigators worked throughout the weekend, ultimately obtaining warrants Sunday afternoon against the couple for their actions.
